TV is 6 years old, only problem I have had is lamp replacement, which I did myself.

This lamp life is about right if the TV is getting constant use. Please check that the cooling fan is running at the correct speed and the vents are unobstructed.

Use the Time Warner remote and hit the settings button twice. Scroll down to "audio: digital out" and select HDMI. That solved it for me.
The only issue I have now is that I also have component sound outputs going from the cable box to a receiver. When I turn off the TV while the HDMI cable is hooked up to both the box and the tv the sound goes out to the receiver...

It is your ballast that is causing your short life of your Lamp. The original Part Number for the 'PWB Power' is 934C228001.
I have had this problem at least 100 times and it will give your Lamp a life of about 2 years, 5,500 hours.

I have run into this issue alot. I believe its because of a older version of HDMI 1.1. Quick solution is to hookup the cable box with component cables(yprpb) to utilize the HD picture still and then do some research to see if Mitsubishi has a firmware update on your particular model.
