For desktop, you need to know the brand and model of your motherboard. Once you have the brand and model, check the data sheet of the motherboard for the max RAM that it can support (you can visit the manufacture's web site for the datasheet or manual).
For laptops, you can check the manual or userguide or check with the manufacturer for the maximum supported RAM.
