If your damper motor is not functioning, then it could be one of the following.

the damper motor itself, the thermostat ( the controller),

or the thermistor ( the temperature sensor).

either one of this is bad, then the damper will not work.

bring down the damper motor and check the voltage requirement of the motor. bench test it if you can to determine if it is still working.

test the thermistor for resistance. immerse it in ice cold water and watch the resistance change. if you do not have a reference value, then it may not tell if it is good or bad.

the electronic controller would be a hard thing to test.
if you have the book and it has diagnostics , then run the damper control test to test the controller.

You will need to see if you run the self diagnostics found in the=> Service Manual The problem with the damper could be caused by a defective thermistor, ice build up or just a defective damper. Your model uses the=> WR09X10050 Damper with Thermistor Assembly Running diagnostics wil help you to locate the problem better if you can read and do the from the Service Manual. I have a 23' free standimg dispensing side by side ref. my ref is not cooling but the freeze part is working

when you open the freezer door do you hear the fan blowing?all that happens is the evaporator coil in the freezer gets cold, the evap fan blows the cold air from the freezer and into the fridge side, there are ducts on the bottom left side where the air return sto the freezer,if that's blocked the fridge will get warm, also if the fan is blowing depending on your model you could have a damper,it's in the fridge section up top where the cold air blows into, all it is is a door that opens and closes to let the air in when the fridge section gets warm and then it closes when it's cold enough,if the damper is bad it won't open and let the air in,sometimes it gets stuck in the open position and things start to freeze in the fridge section.if you can't figure it out send the model number and i can see what model you have, open the fridge door, look up on the right side near the ceiling and you should see a tag with the model number.good luck and have a great weekend.also from the bottom up in the freezer, remove the second bin of food and touch the back inside wall of the freezer,if there's frost or like snow on the back inside wall of the freezer you have a defrost problem, let me know what you find.

The food on the refrigrator side is freezing. the water line is not working so i assume its frozen as well.

Hello Tina,

The problem with it freezing in the freshfood section is going to be because the air damper that opens and closes to let cold into the ref. section is stuck open and too much cold air is entering into the ref. compartment. This is a fairly common occurence with the GE refrigs. and by replacing the fresh food air damper which is located in the upper left corner of the fresh food compartment it will open and close properly and not allow too much cold air to enter where upon it freezes everything.

My fridge keeps freezing things in the fridge

Hello,

What the most likely thing causing that is that the air damper that opens/closes to let air into the refrig. section is stuck open and too much air is entering into the ref.section allowing things to freeze, that is a fairly common thing with GE refrig's.

To fix that the air damper would need to be replaced..the exact location of it is,upper left corner of the ref. section on the left side wall at the top.

On my Maytag side by side, stainless steel fridge, Model #: MSD2651KES. The freezer works perfectly, but the fridge will not get cold, but if you open the freezer it will start sending cold air to the...

Its defrost problem.--------- When you open the freezer door, then ice starts getting defrosted, because outside temperature is warm and due to that inside ice gets bit melted.--------- -------------- The working procedure of this unit is as follows: --- The compressor starts then it cools the freezer section. When the freezer reaches its cooling level the defrost cycle starts functioning. In this cycle the fan in the freezer section starts running and the cool air in the freezer section is passed to the fridge section and the fridge section gets cold. The air from freezer to refrigerator passes from the section, in that section the damper is located. ----------- The damper is operated by a motor. Its a complete damper assembly with motor included in it.--The damper has door.Which closes and open with the help of motor. In your case the damper door is blocked by ice, because your refrigerator is not defrosting. But when you open the freezer door, the inside ice gets bit warm and it starts melting and this lets the fridge section get cool.------------------- In this case you will have to manually defrost the ice and inspect, if the problem solves. For manual defrost procedure, click the link below:-------- Click this below for more detail:--- http://technoanswers.blogspot.com/2011/06/refrigerator-is-not-cooling-properly.html ----------- This will help.Thanks.Helpmech.

if the freezer is ok,the damper of the ref side is close need to adjust or replace,2 is the sensor is the sensor is defective the ref side not cooling even the sensor of freezer side if defective may cause why not cooling in ref side, its hard explain to remove or to check the unit by its your self, much better call an service technician to check what the exactly coz why not cooling, and you get a warranty for the service compare you buy a part, but you dont know what how to test the part if is ok or not.

Refrigerator compartment cools correctly for a few days then no longer receives cold air from freezer. The freezer continues to operate and gets much colder than it should.

does your fan blow? freezers have a fan that pushes cold air to the fridge side if fan is bad freezer will run extremely cold and fridge won't cool down and since frige won't cool down thermostat in fridge doesn't tell compressor to stop

Fresh food side freezing

the air damper is stuck open or tempature control is bad. look thru the vents(use a mirror) on the left rear(top side) of the fresh food compartment (right hand door) to see if the air damper is open/closed. i am sure it will be open since your freezing food in the ref section. if it is open ,watching with your mirror turn ref (fresh food) control off. the air dmper should close, if not damper could be stuck(ice build up,piece of foam, ect) if you can determine damper door is free, then best thing to do is replace controlassy.(120.00 or so) good luck

Not cooling regrigiderator side only freezer working fine, small problem previously with ice dispenser and lights

Check to see if you have air coming from the damper assembly, that is where the air comes in the ref side. If not take a small thin screwdriver and poke it in the damper and see if it is open, you have just a little play there where you could get it to open. If it stays open then you will most likely need a damper, that is if it is a motor controled one. A manual is contoled by the control on front. The damper could be blocked with ice inside.
Also check to see if the evap motor on the freezer side is running. you may have to take the evap cover off on the freezer side and make sure you are defrosting properly so there is air getting to the ref side.

Side by Side GE Hotpoint Refrigerator HSS251FMCC

You may have a double problem. One, you state that the damper stays shut. if the box is running 50 degrees, it should be wide open, My question is, do you think because that there is no air from the damper that it is closed? The usual problem on these units is that it is not defrosting and the evap coil gets blocked with ice. This will cause an air flow problem to the ref side, although the freezer seems to work. The most likely cause is a bad defrost heater. If not, then possible a bad damper if it is not opening.
