    I have a 2001 model that has similar problem. The game selection dial and the first number selection dial both work fine. The numbers on the second dial does not map to the number the game thinks is selected. Here's my correspondence mapping, first number is the dial - second is number game thinks it is:

    0 = 0 sometimes, other times nothing
    1 = 1
    2 = 2
    3 = 3
    4 = 8
    5 = 9
    6 = 6, sometimes 8
    7 = 9
    8 = 8
    9 = 9
    10 = 10
    11 = 11
    12 = 1
    (lightning) = usually nothing
    (clock) = 1

    Fresh, never used, batteries were put in the game during testing.

SOURCE: change batteries on 1998 Leap Frog Twist & Shout

After reading the suggestions above, I used 2 screwdrivers to push the white buttons inward while holding the unit between my knees and with unit inverted, pulled upwards until I felt it move. Then I was able to pull the rest of the end off and replace the batteries. Like a previous poster indicated, I removed the other end and 2 pieces fell out. Unfortunately the 2 pieces that fell out I didn't see where they came from. So now the batteries were changed, but the unit doesn't work until I can figure out where these 2 pieces go. Horrible construction design and definitely needs a redesign. It would have also helped if the instruction manual indicated how to change the batteries.

I had a similar problem but with the model that only has 1 button. I fought with it sticking a screwdriver in the button and it wasn't coming off. Then I used a pencil and pushed the button down even farther and the whole top including rim came of as it was designed. It looks like they went through several designs before finally putting the battery compartment out in the open

Broken Leap Frog Leapster Learning Game System

I purchased a Leapfrog Leapster in end of June sales last year for my daughter's birthday in October 2008. When she first turned it on it froze but after restarting played fine for 2 hrs then died and refused to work again. Fortunately I had kept my receipt (Target) but was still worried about it having been 4 months prior. They ended up giving me a store credit as they no more in stock at that store and I picked one up from another Target without having to pay the difference between my original sale price. I know you don't have the receipt but you could contact the place of purchase and ask them even if they are able to send off for repairs or put you in contact with the right people. Hope it helps a little ...
