I am not sure where I can find the four to eight digit pin for my linksys model router, as I have tried everything listed under the router itself.

For that press RESET button of your router for 10 seconds then it will automatic restart and reset. then connect router to computer lan port with lan cable. then you can access it with default ip addresshttp;//192.168.1.1 or http://192.168.1.2 Type user as 'admin" and password as "admin" or "1234" or "password" or blank then you can see configuration page of router. Then click on wireless->security then note down the password. It's your password to connect wireless.

I wanted to secure my wireless connection how do I do that with the model BEFW11s4?

You need to login to the router homepage by typing: 192.168.1.1 into any internet browser. When it asks for a username and password look at the bottom of the router. Follow the onscreen instructions from there.
Please leave me a good rating, thanks! :)

How do i make a password on my wifi conection..my router is linksys BEFW11S4 v.2

First, your router is old, go pickup a new one that supports the G standard, don't worry it will fall back to B standard or better yet get an N standard router. To setup wireless security directly connect a pc via cat5 data cable to one of the switch ports on the router (not the wan) and login to the web innerface, click the wireless tab, now look for the security or encrypted options. Most routers support WPA-2 encryption where you enter a phrase of 2 or 3 words if your router only supports web encryption go buy a new router. Save it, then go to your pc, disconnect, remove the wifi ssid from your managed wireless list refresh and search for the ssid of your wireless signal (name), now connect and the router should challenge you for your WPA pass phrase you setup in the router. Now your wifi ssid is secure and all connections will require the passphrase.

You can secure your wireless network wit WEP or WAP code.
For that Connect your router to computer with ethernet cable then you can access it with following default link.
http://192.168.0.1
or
http://192.168.1.1
If you are not able to access it with above ip then check your computers ip address gateway ip is your router ip try with it.
Then it ask for user name and password.
Type user as "admin" and password as "admin" or "password" or "1234" blank.
Then you can see configuration page of router.
If you are not able to access router then RESET it .You can RESET it with reset button it is in back side of router press it for 10 seconds then all settings goes to defaults then you can access it with above link.
Click on wireless settings then enable WEP Security then add WEP code .It is your password to connect wi fi.Then save settings and restart router.
Then you can connect your wi fi network with that code.
Let me know if you need further assistance.

You have befw11s4 router, which is very old router.
May be you will need to upgrade the firmware of the router.
change the channel to 6.
check the wireless security settings.
Make sure that the wireless MAC filter is disabled.
For this you will need to access the router set up page.
make sure that the computer is connected to the router with the cable when you open the router set up.

Securing my wireless linksys BEFW11S4 ver. 4

Hello,

I’ll be pleased to help if I can. To answer your last question first, this router is already set up for wireless networking, so nothing further needs to be done with regard to that.

However, to prevent others using your connection, it's necessary to set up wireless security. There are four main steps, which are the same for most routers:

1) Login to your router, using a wired connection
2) Change the router login password
3) Change the network name (SSID)
3) Enable WPA encryption

Here are the details:

1) Login to your router, using a wired connection.
First, you will need an Ethernet cable to connect one of your computers to the router. This cable just plugs into a spare port on the back of your router, while the other end plugs into the Ethernet port on your computer (looks like this picture).

When you are connected, open a web browser on your computer. Type the router’s IP address into the address bar, which is http://192.168.1.1 for this model. (Note, there is no ‘www’)

You should then see a popup box, prompting you for a username and password. If these have not been changed, leave username blank and enter password: admin

If you log in successfully, you should then see the Linksys router configuration screen.

2) Change the router login password.
To set a new password, go to Administration > Management. Set and confirm a new Router Password. On this screen, I would also recommend that ‘Remote Upgrade’ and ‘Remote Administration’ are disabled. Click ‘Save Settings’ when finished.

(Tip: write the password on a label and stick it on the router, or keep it somewhere safe. )

3) Change the SSID (router name):
Go to Wireless > Basic Wireless Settings. Change the ‘Wireless Network Name (SSID)’ from the default, to anything you like, that you can remember. It is case sensitive, and you can use up to 32 letters –but do not use something that could identify you, or your location.

At this stage I’d recommend that SSID broadcast remains enabled.

4) Enable WPA encryption
Go to Wireless > Wireless Security. Enable Wireless Security. Under ‘Security Mode’ you have a number of options for encryption, but I would pick WPA-Pre-Shared Key, which is very secure and good for most equipment.

Under ‘WPA Shared Key’ you need to enter a network key. This is a long password, or passphrase, between 8 and 63 letters/numbers long. This can be any series of letters/ numbers, or you can use a phrase with numbers
( eg: 456the51stSTATeOFtheUSA1599 ). It is case sensitive. The stronger the network key the better, if you are very concerned about security.

Note down the network key carefully. You will need this to connect wirelessly. (The network key may also be called the WPA shared key, PSK, WPA-PSK, pre-shared key, security key, passphrase, or authentication key). Click ‘Save settings’ when finished.

That's it, you have done enough to secure your network, and can close the screen.

There are further security options to enable if you wish, but these three are the most important.

When you next connect wirelessly, you should see your network with its new name in the 'available wireless networks'. When you attempt to connect, you are asked for the network key you set in Step 4. If all goes well, you can then save this and will connect automatically in future.

Hope this helps you. Please come back to Fixya if this doesn't work, or if you need help with any of it.
