I tried both of these solutions but in the second case, the photo pro was not checked so I could not unselect it and thus neither worked?????

Good Evening Smarum:

For Canon printers and all printers, the perferences or changes that you need to make can be done by selecting the printer icon located in your control panel.

Once you've located the printer icon in your control panel, right click on the defaulted printer. (Indicated with a check mark.). A menu will appear. Then, by selecting Perferences and hitting Defaults and Apply, you should be able to take the printer back to it's original settings. If not, view the setting under the Effects tab and uncheck the pro selection.

If I can be of further assistance, please let me know.

And, remember, always include the type of Operating System when you submit your questions.

Have a wonderful evening.

Did you click default and apply in all of the tabs located in your Perference icon?

Then, the only thing that you can do is probably uninstall and reinstall and this will take you back to default settings.

Hi
If there is text with the photos on the page, set the quality to photo/text mode. If you are copying just photos then set the quality to photo mode.

Ink Color Issues

Did you change any of the configurations on your printer. Most photo printers have color settings that are media dependent. It sounds like you might have it set to print on regular paper but not on photo paper. There are a lot of settings that you can accidentally change on a printer so I would suggest uninstalling the printer then reinstalling it and see if that is the issue.

Resetting to "normal" print

I am guessing that you do not have the Manual.

Try this site for a Manual:

http://support-au.canon.com.au/EN/search?canonsearch=1&lang=EN&category=All-in-One+Printers&series=All-in-One+Printers&model=PIXMA+MP780&menu=Manual

It should have the instructions you need.

Have you tried the Printers Help pages?

Good luck.
