there is a tensioner pulley as well as the drum and motor
It hooks into a slot, usually on the floor of the case, and has a spring that pulls it against the belt to tension the belt.
Broken belts have been known to knock the tensioner out of place, it should be sitting on the floor of the case as should its spring.
There is usually ony one slot for it to sit in, self evident if you know to look for it
loop the belt around the drum.
slide the belt down the drum directly over the motor pulley
loop the belt around the motor pulley
pull the tensioner pulley hard to the end of its travel against its spring
wrap the belt around the tensioner pulley
release the tensioner so the spring pulls it against the belt
rotate the drum by hand to ensure the belt is aligned and does not pull offf the pulleys
reassemble case
dry clothes
its easier than it looks seeing a broken belt in the bottom of the case.

See if there is a pulley on the belt that can be moved to tighten the tension. Often the motor's mounting bolts can be loosened and the motor itself can be moved to tighten the belt and restore friction. If not possible, a new tight belt is in order.

The small belt in the middle of the drum broke. After I pulled the drum off I noticed a small plastic wheel on a metal bracket loose in the bottom of the dryer. I can not see where this reataches and I...

its called an idler arm, it attaches next to the motor as this is what keeps tension on the belt so it will stay tight on the drum. If I remember correctly there is a slot on the bottom of the dryer close or right next/past the motor, slide it into that slot, with the small plastic wheel up next to/by the motor. I am attaching a diagram for the belt it will help. Good Luck and I hope I helped Tim:

Remember the belt should ride in the middle of the drum and the back of the drum is lipped and should go behind the drum rollers. Once the belt is thread it will be tight and the idler arm will not longer be loose.

The dryer will heat up etc but will not spin...any suggestions?

there is a belt that goes around the drum and is attached to a pulley at the bottom. you will need to unplug the dryer access either the front or back and check to see if the belt is tight. if its loose or snapped off, you may have to purchase a new one. it's cheaper than replacing it with a new dryer. good luck!

I have a Maytag Model pyet224ayw electric dryer, The belt broke and I replaced it. Now when I put the new belt on, every time that I turn it on the belt jumps off the tention pully. Can the problem be that...
this site has proper belt routing pictures for several brands maytag included might be helpful the only other thing i can think of the idler may be worn out or bent or drum may be tight not turning properly should turn freely with belt loose from inside dryer
should be able to push vanes and rotate drum easily
good luck ron

How do I change the rubber wheel under drum on left side? The wheel on right side is fine and tight. Left side very loose and causing dryer to be very loud.

On a front load machine, you would remove the front of the dryer, remove the drum belt, and lift the drum out of your way...then install your new roller...reassemble.

Dryer belt does not apear to be broken but cannot see what pully is broke or other problem

if the belt isnt broken, and just loose then check your "idler" pulley, its on a spring steel bracket by the motor and it keeps the belt tight thats more than likely the culprit from your description

New belt but drum still won't turn

make sure that he put the tensioner on the right way with the spring it will make the belt really tight !This is sometimes hard to do because the spring will bite you if your not careful !!

yes it keeps the belt tight so it can turn the drum. its like a pulley that keeps the tension on the belt so that the tub can spin the belt tight now or is it loose?

Belt Not Tight

The belt gets tight when you press the pulley arm down place the belt over the outer edge of the pulley and then over the motor axis. The belt then runs like in a "eight". Christian
