Question about Lexmark T642 Laser Printer

Close door or insert cartridge

I had just pulled the T642 out of the box, reseated the cartridge after removing all the tabs necessary. Power it on and i get this message saying close door or insert cartridge. I have tried 3 different cartridges, checked the door hinges and sensors to make sure everything looked ok. No matter what I do it gives that message after it boots up.

Thanks Corysf62, I had already figured out the problem before I even got back to my desk and saw that there was a response. With me being like curious george I couldn't help but start to take that door apart and find out whats not connecting. On the switch itself (little as it is) the metal lever that helps it push the button in was not even on the switch. Manufacturer mistake i guess. I just cracked open the lid to a T632 we have for spare parts and took the little metal lever off of it. :) All's good now. :)

Hello, I having the same problem. I checked the hinge on the left side and it seems to be there. I even tried a new toner. Any other ideas? Maybe I am missing something. I found a little Y type small metal peace laying on the left side of the printer. It looks like it has 2 clips on it. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

The reason that the error message is vague and says to close door OR insert cartridge is because it doesn't know which condition is causing the error.

There is a switch, located in the left hinge, on the front cover that must close for the printer to work.

When the cover is closed AND a cartridge is installed, part of the cartridge pushes the spring clip on the switch to the closed position.

If there is no cartridge, then the switch can't close, but like wise, if the cover is open, then the cartridge can't hold the switch in.

The problem I have seen with this printer many times, is that the silver actuator part of the switch actually falls off of the switch. There is nothing for the cartridge to press against, and therefore, the switch will not close.

If this is in fact an out of box failure, 95% of the time, lexmark will simply send out a replacement printer to exchange for the one that failed, but even if they do not exchange it, it is covered under warranty and they will send an onsite technician out to you to replace the part.

They would normally replace the entire front hinge assembly, part number 40X0006, which includes the switch. The number for Lexmark is 1-800-539-6275 Mon - Fri: 9 am - 9 pm & Sat: 12 pm - 6 pm

Good Luck.

    HI Kha...

If you re-read my original answer, you will see that the silver piece you found is exactly what I was referring to.

That piece is PART of the switch assembly. When the door is closed on the printer, part of the toner cartridge casing slides up and presses on that silver piece and actuates the switch.

Since that part came off the switch, there is no way for it to become engaged.

If you can, remove the switch from the hinge, press the two side pieces together SLIGHTLY so they are more snug, and reattach to the switch, then reinstall it.

This WILL fix the problem :)

This repair worked like a charm for me. The little metal piece just pops right in when you take the switch out.

How do you remove toner cartridge from a Dell 3010cn color laser printer correctly.appears to be stuck trying to remove

This is how to Install or replace the Toner Cartridge.

Install or replace the toner cartridge while the printer is on (if the power is not on, the cartridge carrier does not rotate).

1. After confirming the Insert Yellow Toner(Y) message, open the front door.

2. Hold the tape on the protective cover and pull it forward to remove the cover from each cartridge slot.

NOTE: You need to remove the protective cover only the first time that you install the toner.
NOTE: Dispose of the protective cover after you remove it.
NOTE: The protective cover is attached to each toner cartridge mount.

3. Make sure the color of the toner cartridge matches the slot on the toner cartridge carrier. The order is Y, M, C, K. Gently shake the cartridge to distribute the toner evenly.

4. Lift the tab up 90 degrees and pull the toner seal straight off, keeping it parallel with the toner cartridge.

5. To insert the toner cartridges, align the arrows on the cartridge with the corresponding arrows on the printer. Guide the cartridge in until it snaps into place and then push down the handhold to lock the cartridge in place.

6. Close the front door.

NOTE: Make sure the toner cartridge is installed correctly. Otherwise, the front door cannot close firmly.

7. The toner cartridge carrier rotates to the next empty slot. When the color of the newly inserted cartridge appears on the display, followed by the Insert message, insert the next toner cartridge.

8. Repeat steps 1 through 7 when inserting the remaining cartridges.
Cheers!!
