Theft Deterrance system

I just purchased a refurbished Gateway FPD1975W LCD monitor and after getting it set up it worked beautifully but after 10 minutes it went to black and white with a window saying
"This display is protected by Gatewayshield Theft deterrence system. To return to normal operation perform one of the following,

Return this display to it's original authorized PC
or install EZ Tune on this PC and Enter corrct PIN

Can someone please tell me what this means and how can I remove or correct it.

Thanks
Ed

If you ever have this problem but cannot get to the 'extras' button, leave the computer on that (hopefully) already has the eztune software installed, pull the power on the monitor (the cord, not just press the power button) and then plug it back it...it should unlock automatically. It ticks me off that I just got off the phone with gateway tech support and they wouldnt tell me that because my monitor is 'out of warranty'...purchased 4/8/08 and problem today 7/15/09...bums. Anyway, they offered to fix for a fee. I got it fixed.

According to Gateway's website on this (located here):

Disable GatewayShield Theft Deterrence

  1. Launch EzTune.

  2. In the EzTune window, click the Plug-ins tab, and then click Theft Deterrence.

  3. To deactivate theft deterrence, click Disable Theft.

  4. Type the PIN for the monitor in the appropriate field, and then click Accept.

  5. A screen confirms that theft deterrence is now disabled.

If you don't know the original PIN, you will need to contact Gateway [ 1-800-GATEWAY ] to have them reset it for you.

Hope this helps - remember to rate those that offer their time and expertise to you for free :)

Monitor message says "Theft Disable

The theft deterrence system can be disabled temporarily by unplugging the monitor's power cord. Then it will start the counter again. (The default is 60 minutes and is set in the EzTune software.) The software locks the monitor to one computer (the one running the EzTune software). To disable the theft deterrent message, enter EzTune and click on the Extras tab. Then select the Theft Deterrence section and enter the PIN. The PIN can be saved online and then you can request it if forgotten: https://pinreg.portrait.com/index.php?OEM=gwy&PRODUCT=dtune&ULANG=enu .

The EzTune software is available here: http://oem.portrait.com/dtune/gwy/enu/upgrade.html .

The user's guide and other documentation is available here: http://support.gateway.com/s/MONITOR/7005574R/7005574Rnv.shtml .

I hope this helps.

The monitor is a Gateway FPD1975W TFT LCD Monitor. I do not know the age of the unit. As of late it will not turn on. When the power button is pushed it will just blink like it it in standby mode even...

It was released about 2006.
I do hope you do have the PIN to unlock it, otherwise you will have to contact Gateway.

It may have hardware problem inside due to bad caps.

Can not get my monitor to come on. power button is just flashing

This is a ether a problem with the monitor or video card. try another monitor. if it works fine then the high voltage power inverter is bad and they run around $70 refurbished. if same problem then your video card has gone bad.

Theft disable menu pops up and won't go away and it keeps turning off my monitor

You need to install EZTUNE from Gateway, but you need to go here first:
Portrait Displays' Theft Deterrence minimizes theft or unauthorized relocation of your display. Theft Deterrence does not prevent the display from being stolen, but hinders the operation of the display once it is removed from the 'Theft Deterrence enabled' host computer.

This site is provided for you to securely store your PIN in the event you should need to retrieve it at some point in the future.

Please select from the following options.

The best way to protect both the screen and computer is to use an anti-theft cable. The cable is secured to the screen, computer and the desk using very strong self adhesive anchor pads and is then padlocked to the desktop.

Restart the PC and get into SAFE MODE. Hit and release F8 many times right after turning on PC. If it works, then go into your video setting and either change the settings or remove the video driver. Restart the PC and you'll get 800X600 screen, then reinstall the video drivers. IF it won't go above 800X600, screen internals are bad, LCD toasted. I've seen that happen with LCDs and older monitors.
