Question about LG Refrigerators

1 Answer

My LG fridge freezer has man times stopped working for no reason. Unfortunately it has happened many times when I have been on holiday. Sometimes just the fridge goes off and sometimes just the freezer, but usually both go off. If I switch off the appliance at the plug and switch it back on, everything starts to work again. I am thinking of getting rid of it as I have lost so many freezerfuls of food.

Hello finokane,
welcome to fixya.
Happy to be of service

You said, your LG fridge freezer has man times stopped working for no reason. Unfortunately it has happened many times when you have been on holiday. Sometimes just the fridge goes off and sometimes just the freezer, but usually both go off. If you switch off the appliance at the plug and switch it back on, everything starts to work again. You are thinking of getting rid of it as you have lost so many freezers full of food.

How old is the freezer.
My advice is get a new freezer.
It will pay for itself in only a few years!

Here is an interesting report I just read!

Repair or replace?

When to pull the plug on your old refrigerator

It nearly always makes sense to undertake simple do-it-yourself repairs,
such as replacing a gasket on a refrigerator or a freezer.

Typically, you'll also find a troubleshooting section for more-serious problems
in the owner's manual.

Should you pay for a repair or buy a new model?
The answer depends mostly on the age of your refrigerator,
how much you bought it for,and the cost of the repair.

Follow these guidelines:

When a repair makes sense.

If your refrigerator is under warranty or less than four years old (three years for top-freezers),
paying for a repair makes sense.
Note that refrigerators under warranty might require service from a factory-authorized technician;
readers have found them on a par with independent repairers.

When a repair might be a wise choice.

If your refrigerator is out of warranty and is four to seven years old,
it might make sense to pay for a repair. Customers generally pay $100 to $200 for a repair.
But you might want to buy a new model even at this stage,
given that today's models are quieter and have added features.
Higher energy efficiency is another plus: Energy Star-qualified models made after April 28, 2008,
are 43 percent more efficient than conventional models built before 2001 and 56 percent
more efficient than those built before 1993.

When it pays to replace.

The repair costs more than half the price of a comparable new refrigerator.
Data also shows that it doesn't pay to fix a less-expensive top-freezer refrigerator
six or more years old or a bottom-freezer or side-by-side eight or more years old.

Thanks to better recycling programs, less than 10 percent
of a refrigerator you replace is likely to end up in a landfill.

Water leaking under a fridge freezer

There can be 2 reasons for this ... the first is that the machine is causing condensation and is dripping on to the floor. Automatic defrosting fridge freezers do this but usually the quantity of water evaporates before any is on the floor.

If the Fridge / Freezer has an automatic Ice maker, or has a cold water supply, then I would suggest that there is a water leak to the system. In this case, find the water supply feed and turn it off to eliminate this as the source.
If this stops the leak, then either the supply is leaking or the problem is inside the fridge / freezer and you will need either a plumber or a repair man to fix the problem.

My fridge part of fridge/freezer doesn't work

Post the model number of the refrigerator. Defrost freezer behind where the cold air circulates with a hair drier. (unplug power first!) Most times when a refrigerator side stops cooling it is because the freezer evaporator behind the panel in the back of freezer (most times) has become blocked by frost=> SEE PHOTO Most times the panel before you see the frosted covering the evaporator will begin to show a layer of frost building=> SEE PHOTO (Click each photo to enlarge.) Sometimes the fresh food section of the refrigerator side will warm because ice or frost will block the damper from moving that regulates temperatures in the fresh food section. Sometimes the damper is defective and sometimes the sensor that controls the damper movement is defective. For these reasons it is important that you provide your model numbers so someone knows just what type refrigerator you have to cover all of the possibilities of what may be wrong causing the warming of the fresh food section and soon the freezer section will also begin to warm. The most likely cause are the defrost control, ADC Adaptive Defrost Control, defrost heater, defrost thermostat, air damper and air damper sensors in that order. Let me know what you have and I will try to identify just what may be happening, Thanks Sea Breeze

Have him check the compressor and the relay. It sounds like you are have a bad compressor that is over heating. I am a certified HVAC-R tech which means that I work on these kind of things. What you can do is move the freezer out and check how hot the compressor is. If you touch it and have to move your hand away REAL fast bad compressor

LG fridge suddenly stopped cooling.

If the fan inside the freezer is running and the compressor behind the fridge is running and is hot to touch, you have a gas problem or the compressor is inefficient. This can only be confirmed by connecting refrigeration gauges to the gas system and should only be performed by a fridge tech.
