Easy! You need a wireless router. My recommendation is Linksys wireless-G (or wireless-N if the laptop supports it). Linksys routers are easy to configure and very durable. It'll run you $50-60 at any computer store (Walmart even has them)

Best of luck, and make sure you rate users who offer their time & expertise to you for free :)

Wireless connection problems

Its hard to diagnose cause the process starts long before your current setup..ie, programming your router. So I have attached a website from Microsoft that walks you thru the steps to set up your wireless home network so you can backtrack...good luck and let me know if you have any problems. Pls rate this solution.

Hi I,m thinking about buying an Acer Aspire just to surf the net etc, nothing fancy and have never hooked up laptop access at home...what do I need?? Im a woman who deals with computer problems all day at...

It all depends what you want for internet, wired, or wireless. I would say in your case, you would be better off with wireless internet. Also, i would recommend that you explore your options before purchasing a laptop, acer laptops are not very good in my opinion, they don't last long, and they are usually outdated by at least 6 months. You may want to check out tigerdirect.com, newegg.com, or frys.com, those are all great sites for purchasing computers, and computer accessories. But on to the original question, i'm going to assume you want wireless internet. You will have to make sure the laptop you purchase has wifi/wireless built in. The website you are purchasing the laptop from, or the representative in the store you're purchasing it from should be able to tell you whether or not it has wifi. Next you will need a wireless router, you want a router with wireless g functionality, they cost from $30 - $75 and will serve your purposes perfectly. The router should come with setup instructions, usually they're pretty user friendly. That is all you need for a wireless home network, unless you have desktop computers that you would like to have wireless, then you would have to get a wireless card for each one.

Home network set up

Possibly the best solution for moving the emails is not as much about a home network as it is about the method you use. I definitely enjoy having a home network because it allows me to share music and files between my computers and it allows me to give internet access to friends when they come over.

That being said, it sounds like you are using Outlook Express for your email and are going to be moving it to Vista's "Windows Mail", which is a repackaging of the same program.

To do this, you will have to export your email in a format that the Windows Mail in your new laptop can read. Luckily you aren't the first person to do this. Try this instructional page. The trick is that where this walkthrough assumes you will be moving the data in a thumb drive or other transportable device, if you had a home network set up you could save it directly to the shared directory of your new computer. That's the only difference.

After you have followed the instructions, make sure all of your email has imported properly and then delete it from the Windows XP laptop. Also, remember to delete from your thumb drive or other device the file you used to transfer the email over to the new computer.

If you don't already have wireless set up, it is probably the easiest and most friendly way to have a home network. Microsoft has a good starter introduction to it. But the basics are pretty basic. If you have DSL or Cable internet already and your "router" or modem doesn't already have a wireless router built in (no antennae), then you'll need a wireless router. Even if you don't have any DSL/Cable service you'll want a wireless router. Check out Netgear, 3Com, and Linksys for these.

Cannot obtain internet

if you already have an ethernet card installed in the laptop, then it should be fine. did you try rebooting the modem that you are hooking the laptop to? Sometimes with different ISPs that is one of the major issues.

Are you trying to access your laptop (which you leave at home) from another computer away from home?
  • If so, head over to www.logmein.com and sign up for a free account. It's a wonderfully easy way to get remote control of your machine from another location without worrying about the networking.
Are you trying to use your laptop on the road and still have Internet?
  • If so, you will need some method for your laptop to connect to the Internet. If your laptop has a wireless WiFi card you can go to some location that has wireless internet. Many locations (such as hotels, cafes, and coffee houses) have free or paid wireless Internet service.
  • You can also get a Wireless Aircard as your friend said. These are a fee-based service from cell companies such as Verizon or Sprint that give you a card that plugs into your laptop and uses the wireless cell network to give you Internet access.

Acer Aspire 5000 wireless device / driver has disappeared

TJBeta, this laptop typically comes with Windows XP Home edition. LynnieSam, right-click on your MY COMPUTER icon and then select PROPERTIES. When the window pops up, select HARDWARE and then DEVICE MANAGER. Scroll down if you have to and look under NETWORK ADAPTERS. If you do not see it there, try to have the drivers reinstalled. If you do see it there, and there is a yellow exclamation point by it, then Windows knows its there, but there is a problem of some sort. Usually if you uninstall the item (right click on it and then select uninstall) and then reinstall it by clicking on ACTION in the menu bar and selecting SCAN FOR HARDWARE CHANGES, it will reload the necessary drivers. This has worked for me many times. You may also need to get the drivers from the ACER website. Of course, you will need to hook up the laptop via the Ethernet port with a cable to your router or get them from a family members or friends computer. Please let me know if you need any clarification or any other help.
