Question about HP Computers & Internet
This sounds like either a fan or CPU/motherboard problem. Either one is going to be expensive to fix, the fan less so than the CPU ($15-20 vs $100-$400).
However, before we assume that the laptop is dead, remove the battery and attempt to boot up just using AC power only. If the problem persists, put the battery back and remove the AC power, and try booting up just on battery. If the problem happens either way, it's the fan or the CPU/motherboard/.
I know this isn't what you wanted to hear, but that's what's happening. A decent local repair technician (not a big mass-repair place like Geek Squad) should be able to replace the fan with labor around $50 or so. The CPU/motherboard replacement will run at least $100-$150 in labor, plus cost of parts.
Obviously, try the fan first. You can pick them up on eBay and that way you won't be charged "extra" for the technician "finding" the fan for you. You should only have to pay them labor costs.
Obviously, if the fan doesn't fix the problem, it's the CPU/motherboard. At that point, I'd cut my losses with the fan (maybe even relist it for sale on eBay) and go buy another laptop. You'll pay $300-$500 just to fix it, or you can buy a new one for not much more, with warranty.
Hope this helps you out - I'm here to answer any additional questions you might have :)
