I called Garmin customer service and they said to connect the GPS to the serial port on my computer, using the cable supplied with the unit. And then they guided me to a download page. You have to download a downloader program and then the software update to fix the problem (or turn off waas). Your computer must have a serial port (9 pin DB connector) to communicate with the GPS. If you don't have a serial port on your computer, you will have to buy a serial interface card or just use another computer that has a serial port. I don't think that a USB to serial converter will work, because some of them are only async. devices (one way).

The problem developed because of the launch of a new satellite. You will notice that if you go into the menu and leave the unit turned on, it will stay on. The problem occurs only when you are trying to receive satellites. The software upgrade is very simple(automatic) , if you have a serial port on your computer.

I updated my GPS two weeks ago anf I have not had a problem, so this fix works.

Try updating to firmware 3.90 or disable WAAS in the settings screen.

Garmin Etrex Venture HC will not power up/stay on.

Hi,

You are not alone it appears. Follow the link below.

Try here.http://www.fixya.com/support/t2084694-gps_stay I had the same problem as you and I followed the advise to do a "bootlock" to download new software via Garmins WebUpdater. http://www8.garmin.com/support/download_details.jsp?id=931
But please note if the unit switches off during update it may cause problems.

Or you could just return to Garmin for a replacement.

My garmin etrex legend screen goes blank with a vertical line on the screen after about 5 minutes od operation

Unfortunately the only fix for this is to send it back to Garmin for repair. This one can go one of two ways. Either the screen is faulty in which case it's a quick fix and you go away happy, or it's a software fault.. In which case I'd ask for a new one because in my experience most software faults with Garmin devices become recurring problems even though they clear and reprogramme them invariably we see them coming back with more software issues..

Etrex Legend locks up, screen blank except vertical line

Is the unit being bumped during use? If not, sounds like a call to Garmin tech support is in the works. My thought is that it's something defective inside your unit.

Problem with display

Try updating the unit's software via the Garmin website. There was a satellite launched last year which was causing this problem, and updating the unit's software fixes this. Don't forget to come back and tell us if this fix worked for you.

Screen goes blank after locating sattilites.

Accordingto Garmin, this problem can be fixed by disabling the WAAS feature in teh set up menu. There is an incompatibility between the old Garmin software and latest WAAS upgrades. Later software from Garmin is supposed to fix this problem.

Blank screen with a black line down the middle.

Due to a new satellite launched this year, the WAAS is affected. Disable the WAAS, go to Garmin and download the latest software version FOR THIS UNIT. Install, enable WAAS and you should be good to go.

Blank Screen on Garmin E-Trex Vista

The problem is that your software version needs updating. A recently added satellite creates a glitch in the older software. Go to the Garmin website, load WebUpdater if you haven't already done so, and the updated version (3.8) will automatically install to your Garmin unit. I had the same symptoms, they have now disappeared and my Etrex Vista is back to normal.

I had the same problem with an etrex Vista. I spoke with Garmin, they said that a recently launched WAAS satellite is interferring with some models (he mentioned it is the models with a black and white screen). Garmin tech support said that they're working on a software patch but for the meantime switch WAAS off.

Call Garmin tech support with any questions or to find out about the software patch, 1-800-800-1020
