Question about Sony Playstation 3 (PS3) Console

PS3 Does not register external hard drive

I have had my ps3 for about a week, it works fine but when i plug my external hard drive into the usb port it does not "see" it. I am unable to play or view any of the files on the E.H.D.
The E.H.D has been tested and is in good working order. The USB slots on the PS3 likewise. Can anyone help me?

Also, the PS3 can connect to the internet but not to the computers on my network. It's driving me crazy.

The E.H.D. might not be formated correctly. The Playstation 3 will not read any disc or hard disc if it is formatted under NTSC. It must be formatted under FAT or FAT32 ( can't remember exactly). You would need to format the E.H.D. with windows and check to see if you can format it for FAT32 if not then you need a formatting software (Max Drive or some other). Mine works great.
Good luck

Using the USB ports at the front. The PS3 reads most of them including external hard drives except the ones in NTFS. Most of USB keys , phones , tablets etc.. work natively with the console

Just plug a normal external drive and make sure it's formatted in FAT32. Should work fine.

How to play a movie from external drive

First things first; check that the drive is actually connected to the PS3 and the PS3 is on. Try different USB ports as well. If it's connected and all is working well, the drive should show up under the "Video" category. Browse through the folders like you would on a computer until you find the movie, then play it.

------------------------------

Not seeing the drive? Is your external drive the right format? PS3's only support hard drives that are in the FAT32 format. You can check it's format by connecting it to a computer.

On Windows:
1) Open My Computer
2) Right click on your external hard drive.
3) Select Properties.
4) It should say it's format (FAT32 or NTFS) somewhere in the Properties Window

Anyway, if the format turns out to be the issue you can convert your drive into FAT32. First be sure to backup anything important because you may lose some/all of it. Then you'll want to use a utility to convert the drive WITHOUT losing data.

On Windows:
Aoemi Ntfs2Fat32 - Haven't tried it myself, looks alright
EaseUS Partition Master - Should have NTFS to FAT32 w/o data loss conversion
Partition Magic - Awesome, but no longer supported by Norton. Also costs money :(

You can also use the built in Microsoft tools to convert it, but you will LOSE ALL DATA guaranteed (since you'll be formatting the whole thing). Linkage here.

Sorry I don't have Mac OSX instructions.

------------------------------

Confirm that the ports on the PS3 are working. Plug in different devices (PS3 controller, or a different hard drive/ usb thumb drive). If they're not you'll have to send it back to Sony. If it's under warranty it'll be free, otherwise you're looking at $100-ish service charge and a long waiting time. Here's their service center link.

------------------------------

Is the movie in the right format? The PS3 can't play every file type natively. Here's a list of what it does support. If your file is the wrong format, convert if it possible. Otherwise you won't be able to play it from your hard drive.

------------------------------

You could just stream the movie to the PS3. Make sure your PS3 and computer are on the same network (either directly with an Ethernet cable/wireless connection, or through the same router) and download this awesome program. Connect the hard drive to your computer, then run the program. It should automatically find the PS3 and you'll be able to browse the drive from the "Video" category (as if it were directly connected).

I consider this to be the best option. It's pretty easy to use, you also have access to anything else on your computer (not just external, and regardless of drive format), and it converts file formats on the fly (meaning that regardless of format it should be able to play on your PS3). If you have issues check out their forum.

Hope that helps!

How do you change memory from one play station to another without having a memory card can you do it with a usb or external hard drive??

You can indeed use a Memory Stick or external hard drive. You just plug it into the USB port on the PS3 and then manually copy and paste each save data on the memory stick/hard drive. Then just bung them on the new one. I did this when i got the new PS3 slim. Your trophies get automatically transferred when you sign into your new ps3. Hope this has helped.

Putting old hard drive in new ps3 to get game saves error

You cannot switch a hard drive from an old ps3 and put it into the new one. The new ps3 will know that a new hard drive was inserted and offer to format it.

To get the games off the old hard drive, put it back into the old ps3. Insert a USB flash drive into a USB port on the PS3 and you should be able to copy saved games from the hard drive onto the USB flash drive. You can then plug the USB flash drive into your new ps3 and copy off the saved game info,

I connected an external hard drive (with movies) to a USB port in the front of my PS3 Slim but can't find anything new in the video menu for selecting the hard drive. There is nothing plugged into the...

Essentially as long as the drive is formatted as a FAT32 drive you should be able to see it. Once the drive is formatted as FAT32 you want to make sure that you have the same folder structure as the PS3. That is simply done by creating folders called "Picture", "Music", "Video", and "Game" (no quotes please). Once this is done and you connect it to your PS3 you should see the extra drive right away. If you are not able to see your drive then it's either formatted as NTSF, or it is missing the folder structure. Connect it back to your computer and ensure that it has been properly setup.

If your drive is formatted and floder correctly then you may have an issue with your USB port. Try the other port. If you still can't see the drive then try and connect anything else you might have that the PS3 will use through the USB port. If that item cannot be seen then you do have an issue with your port and will have to get it serviced.

HOW DO YOU CONNECT THE PS3 HARD DRIVE TO UR PC?

The hard drive in the PS3 is the same as a laptop hard drive.

Unfortunately there is no way yet to connect the PS3 to the PC over a network, so you will have to remove the hard drive from the computer and physically connect it to the computer.

There are two ways that I know of:
First:
1) Take the hard drive out of the PS3
2) Open your computer case.
3) Install the hard drive just like you would any other hard drive.

Second:
1) Take the hard drive out of your PS3
2) Put the hard drive into an external usb 2.5" hard drive enclosure.
3) Plug the enclosure into your computer's USB port.
