Yes, it turns on and takes pictures. I just can't see them in review and when I press menu, nothing comes up. Also, my auto focus points don't flash and I've been manually focusing everything when though the camera is set to auto focus.

My Canon 5D will turn on and take pictures, but the auto focus and menu/review buttons do nothing. I have to focus manually even though auto focus is on. I can't review images on the camera, but my CFs card upload fine onto the computer. When I press menu, nothing comes up on my screen.

I've already tried replacing the battery numerous times. That does not solve the probelm.

It started a few weeks ago, The only thing that changed was a new UV filter on the outside of the lens cap.

Have you tried a hard reset? Removing all cell batteries in addition to your battery pack. This doesn't always work, but should be done early just to rule out a ram buffer over run issue. Leave those out long enough to have the Ram and Capacitors drain off to local ground. This can take an hour or so.

Then, I wonder if you have spoken to the place of purchase, hoping this was a pros' camera shop and not Best Buy (don't bother with those guys.) But, a professionals camera shop could really help you.

I doubt you camera has any real problems requiring factory support but it may come to that.

Just for kicks, can you see your menu display on your in camera display or when you use video out to a TV set? This is sort of reaching here, but stay with me on the thinking outside the box stuff.

Okay, on the battery change. But, this trick has to do with the removal of the button cell batteries inside, and the battery pack. Then, leave all those batteries out of your camera for several hours.

    Have you tried this already?

UV Filter has no effect to disappear picture view and menu items in camera.
If your are not getting image on LCD by pressing Play button, it means LCD circuit has problem, specially with LCD back-light.
Contact nearest Canon service center for proper repair. Its not such job you can do at home.

Eos 5D lcd screen stays black when power is turned on. It will show menu and review photos taken but otherwise remains black so it will not show what is in front of the lens.

Unfortunately the 5D (original) doesn't have live-view - which allows you to see the picture before you take it. It doesn't have video either but I guess you already knew that.

No image appearing after shot only black screen

Make sure you set it to "auto-review" and that the time is long enought to look at it. Pressing the shutter release will skip the image review and keep the LCD in shooting mode.

How do i auto focus while on manual mode?

That's the idea of "manual" mode...you do it yourself. When you manually focus, the camera will still beep when you reach the correct focus.

Camera auto focuses, shoots but the view screen is black

Check the playback menu that the review time has not been set to OFF. This will stop any pictures displaying on the back of the camera when taking them!

I leave mine at 2 secs which is long enough to quickly review and keeps the battery life up. If I need to review for longer, just use playback.

The flash won't come on if you have the camera in any of the creative modes (i.e. A-DEP, M, AV, TV or P). You can manually use it by pressing the flash button just above the lens release button on the front of the camera.

Focus problems.

The canon 5d was suspected to produced low sharp pictures, but it's wrong. Sharpness is a parameter on the 5D. You can tune it in the menu/image style/ then you choose your style and hit "jump". The first cursor is sharpeness. Enjoy.

Canon 5d af points...

The AF point will luminate very briefly when you press the shutter half way. To change the AF points press the Zoom in button + and then use the dial on the top to select the point you want. If you are not able to do this go into the Menu setting and under custom funtions go to No. 13 and set this to 0:Normal.

To get the image to focus and remain focused while you recompose set the shooting mode to 'One Shot' do this be pressing the AW-WB button them turning the top dial to get to 'One Shot'. When in 'one shot' press the button half way recompose whith out lifting your finger and squeeze all the way when you have recomposed.

Hope this helps.

5d focus confirmation light

Just a wild guess, but in predictive AI focus mode you need a subject in motion for focus to lock and focus adjustment is continous until the exposure is made, in one-shot AF or manual focus mode focus will lock on still subjects. Super nice camera btw.

Camera won't shoot with lens on Auto Focus

Talked to canon support, they suggested to send lense in for review/repair. They said it could be the motor, I think it was a gear problem based on the noises and jerkiness of the focusing action while in manual focus (manual focus gave out as well). Cost TBD - "would definately be more than $50. I shopped around and elected to buy a new lense rather than try to hassle with the repair, shipping, insurance, and the wait, etc. Besides, I have a deadline that I need the lense for, so repair at Canon really became a non-option. I think the cost would've been pretty much the same in the end as the new lense, since this wasn't one of the costlier of lenses to begin with.
