Question about HP Photosmart C5180 All-In-One InkJet Printer

Ink system failure, and printer turns itself back on..

When I try to print, it says "ink system failure" and it sounds like someone is scratching their nails on a chalkboard. When I try to turn it off it goes through it's shutting down steps then turns right back on, unprompted. The display screen then tells me to use the on button instead of unplugging it (I did!!). This has been happening all morning. I can't get it to print, and I can' t seem to get it to go off without unplugging it. Any suggestions?

Try the following reset:

Hold the OK and the Help button at the same time. While holding them down, plug the power in. Continue to hold both buttons until the unit shut off.
After shutting down, release both buttons and power on the printer.

Alternatively follow instructions on this document from HP.

Hi,
Ink System Failure refers to a hardware issue with the printer, however a series of troubleshooting can be tried as a last resort before you get a replacement of your printer.
Try the following:
1. Press and hold the “*” key and then press the “#” key and release both keys.
Now check if there is any message on the printer display, it should display something like "Enter Special Key Combo"
2. Now press and release in sequence the “1”, “2” and “3” buttons.

Now check if there is any message on the printer display, it should display something like "Support"
3. Press and release the right arrow button until the display says “System Configuration Menu”.
4.Press and release the “OK” button.
Now the display should say “Hardware failure status”. If not there already, scroll the arrow Key over to “Hardware failure status”,
5.Press and release the “OK” button.
Now the display should say “Hardware failure status: Clear. Press OK to clear”.
6. Press and release the “OK” Button. Message changes to “Hardware failure status Cleared. Press Cancel to continue”.
7. Now Press and release the “CANCEL” button as many times as necessary, so that, either the “Welcome to Photosmart Express” screen appears, or, the “Ink System Failure” screen appears. PLEASE DO NOT TRY TO PRINT AT THIS STAGE.
8. Turn the printer OFF using the power button and unplug the power cable from back of the printer and wall outlet.
9. Wait for 30 seconds and then replug the power cable
10. Turn ON the printer and let it initialize itself. Then try printing a self test from the printer front panel by pressing the SETUP-->Print Report--->Self Test Report.
This should get it working again.

Reset the system by holding down the OK, Cancel, Black, and Color buttons at the same time and turn the 3310 off. You should keep holding the buttons down until the printer shuts off and then turns itself back on. Turn the printer off twice for the printer to recalibrate. Make sure you have new cartridges in the printer so that it can reset.

This same error started occurring on my printer and eventually it would constantly power on and off. Apparently some defective components were used in the construction of the logic board (see photo). On my C6180 there were 3 failed capacitors (the green cylinders - the puffed top indicates failure) and a 4th from the same manufacturer (TEAPO - many unfavorable web references to this manufacturer). I purchased 3x 330uF 16V and 1x 680uF 10v rated to 105 degrees Celsius (total about 60cents). On the logic board, the capacitors I replaced are labeled C613, C614, C660 and C662. If you are not comfortable replacing the parts yourself (or don't have a soldering tool), you will have to find someone who will. The time to repair should be less than 30 min - I did it in 25 min with only a solder pen. This also fixed the ink system failures the printer was having. A similar fix may apply to other printers

Ink system failure


Hello,
This is a very common problem if you use refilled cartridges or let your ink run really low. The "Ink System Failure" error is causes by air in the ink feed tubes. We have a step by step guide purging the air from the feed tubes posted on our web site. Go to our site at: www.ccl-la.com , click on the printer repair link and then the HP link. Follow the steps and you should be back printing in no time at all.

release the right arrow button until the display says “System Configuration Menu”. (on C8100 use Touch Screen)
2. Press and release the “OK” button.
3. Display should say “Hardware failure status”. If not there already, Arrow Key over to “Hardware failure status”,
4. Press and release the “OK” button.
5. Display should say “Hardware failure status: Clear. Press OK to clear”.
6. Press and release the “OK” Button. Message changes to “Hardware failure status Cleared. Press Cancel to continue”.
7. Press and release the “CANCEL” button as many times as necessary, so that, either the “Welcome to Photosmart Express” screen appears, or, the “Ink System Failure” screen appears. PLEASE DO NOT TRY TO PRINT AT THIS STAGE.
8. Using the Power Button, turn the unit OFF and unplug the power cable from back of the printer and wall outlet.
9. Wait 30 seconds for the power to get discharged and then plug the power cable into the wall outlet first and then into the back of the printer
10. Turn the unit on. The printer may display message “USE POWER BUTTON TO SHUTDOWN THE PRINTER” followed by “PRESS OK TO CONTINUE”. Press OK.
11. If the printer has already initialized, then go to the next step. If not, the printer will start the “ONE TIME INK INITIALIZATION PROCESS”. Allow this process to complete and do not interrupt. Once the initialization process is complete, the printer will print out a Diagnostic Page.
12. To verify printer functionality print a SELF TEST PAGE. If SELF TEST prints, then printer is ready for use or Software Installation.
13. If the error is still there, or reoccurs replace the unit
