I know not everyone has this ability, but if you can, go to a friend's house and hook up an external monitor to your laptop. You may need to use the function keys to switch from LCD to external, but if the line goes away on the external, you have a bad LCD. If the line shows up still on the external, then your problem is either:

a) video driver (free, easy fix)
b) bad inverter (video 'outputter') ...approximately $10-50/varies + labor costs to replace
c) bad video card/motherboard ...usually between $200-$400 + labor to replace

Hope this helps - please be sure to rate my answer :)

I had the identical problem in which video distortion lines show up on a IBM Thinkpad T40 laptop screen AND on an external monitor. Because the video card is built on to the motherboard, the only fix is replacing the motherboard. However, I was able to determine that the problem with the video card appears to be a connection issue, so removing the keyboard and pressing firmly on top of the video card chip must have reseated the connection and video has returned to normal. Obviously this didn't fix the root cause but it did work around the problem. Suggest trying the same action of pressing firmly on top of the video chip down into the motherboard and see if the connection is reseated enough to work, as it did for me.

My dell vostro 1015 has blue vertical line on screen can you please give me suggestion for repair it

Order replacement screen - the casing around the screen either 4 or 6 screws - Screen held in by 4 other screws - connector runs under keyboard (it's a flat ribbon type) - remove keyboard to access the connection. Assemble is reverse. (There is a You Tube video as well).

Vertical line

Run diagnostics on the system, will determine if that is a hardware issue or something related to drivers.
For drivers - obvious first choice is to download the latest drivers from support.dell.com and upgrade
For hardware - you will need the LCD to be replaced, for the lack of other smaller parts you can't order from Dell.
Before you determine hardware, go thru the system teardown documentation and reseat all the LCD parts / cables (usually fixes the line issue, without replacement)

I have a Dell Vostro 1400. When I start up vertical lines appear. On occasions I can start up and use the laptop with no dramas. I have connected an external monitor and the lines also appear. Could...

Lines always mean hardware issues. If it is only on the laptop's display, it is you LCD Screen, if it is on both screens then it is you video card, which is onboard, the whole motherboard must be replaced.

Are you good with a screwdriver? Here's a step by step procedure for replacing the LCD screen on a Dell 1500.

Is fairly easy, but be extremely careful of the ribbon cables, they break very easily!
Good Luck!

Replacing top back cover to Lcd

In front of the screen you should see little rubber contact pieces shoild be about 4- 6 remove these and underneath are the screws to remove housing.
Inside you will see how lcd screen is attached.
Remove lcd screen then replace what you need to. This is the same for most laptops and I would just google your model # tofind out exactly how to.

Problem with the display on screen

Try connecting an external monitor to the laptop and see if the colors are also present on the monitor. If the monitor display is fine, then your laptop’s LCD display panel is defective. If the monitor also displays the colors, then your problem is with either the video card or motherboard located inside your laptop.
