Question about Computers & Internet

Is a hot modem a problem?

I recently subscribed to AT&T DSL and am using the modem provided by AT&T (Motorola 2210-02-1006). It's a small motorola. I am also using a Belkin router. I notice that the router is slightly warm but the modem gets very warm -- almost hot. I don't know if this is normal. I've had no trouble with connection or speed. My concern is the very warm modem. Could this cause a fire or damage my computer? Any thoughts or help on this? Thanks

My Motorola was always hot as a firecracker, then it died after 2 months. Best Buy would not take it back since it was over 14 days and washed their hands of it. They told me to go back to Motorola for a replacement.

This modem apparently has a overheating problem due to a lack of ventilating provisions in the case. I would recommend unplugging the modem after use.

I have the same modem, Motorola 2219,
with the exact same symptoms ... very warm, almost hot. I do unplug mine at night because it makes me nervous.

Mine also stays very warm, and I'm also having problems with my internet connection. I have unplugged and powered back up so many times, only for it to happen again after a short while. I'm beginning to think I have a bad modem.

Solved my hot modem and hot router problem. Bought a cheap laptop pad (with the fans) at Big Lots ($8), plugged it into my router, set modem and router on it. They don't get hot anymore.

SOURCE: Recently I subscribed ATT DSL Service conflict IP Address

the motorola modem that att is using uses 192.168.1.x subnet. log onto your router and change it to 192.168.b.x where b is any number between 2 and 254 (just not 1). You should also log onto the modem and change the setting that allows it to share the external ip address with the router. You will need to do this if you plan on accessing your network from the internet.

Disable the firewall completely. When your done with the Xbox enable it again so you have less chance of getting a virus.

Dsl light goes beyween blinking green, then goes solid red, then back to blinking green. Cannot connect to internet anymore.

The modem cannot get a signal from your service provider. The DSL light is an indicator if your modem is communicating with the network of your service provider. DSL light should always stay solid green. Try contacting your service provider. It might also be an indication of a bad modem.

When plugged in no llights on modem motorola 2210-02

If there are no lights whatsoever illuminating when you have the modem plugged in to the electrical outlet, then this is going to indicate either a faulty power cord or a faulty modem. If you received this modem from your service provider, you may wish to contact them for assistance.

Motorola MSTATEA takes long time to "reconnect"

Check the speed and call ISP tech support to run the line test
Before calling them do a complete power cycle
Turn the modem off and the computer off and router if any
Wait for 30 seconds and turn the modem on and wait for the lights to turn solid
Once ready turn router if you have else computer
Delete the temporary internet files browsing cookies, cache memory.
If the modem turns too hot after running for an hour please replace the modem
DSL light blinking green indicates that there s no proper signal to the modem
Check the wall jack for any loose contacts
If you have any filter check them too
Isolate them and try with it
Change them if possible

My modem keeps losing internet connection

Update your drivers and then do a speed test. Most isp send updates to the subscribers when they update, yours may not. Don't forget to check all of your connections before wasting time calling your isp. I trust this test the most. Rember you don't always get what you pay for.

Connect Modem to Laptop

yes. you plug it in. you plug your cable or DSL line in. Then if they have provided you with a USB A-B (like a printer cable) then you go from the back of the modem to the USB port of your laptop.

Need to hook up Belkin G wireless router to Motorola SB5120

Plug your cable line into your modem, make sure it's tight, but don't use a tool. Next plug the ethernet line from the modem to your PC ethernet port. Then plug in your power to the modem. Allow your modem to sync. Don't use the USB line at all. Do not even hook it up unless your computer doesn't have a working ethernet line. Don't run the disk either, it will only install the modem driver that is only used if you use USB.

If you have issues connecting after that, you may have to go into your ethernet adapter settings and make sure that it is using DHCP. DSL usually uses a different setting (PPP I think) and you will not be able to connect.

By the way, excellent choice in modems.
