Your filter is blocked. It can be one of two things.

1. Coffee - this is obvious
2. Calcium - if you have hard water (i.e. your hot water kettle has white stuff in the bottom attached to the element)

The sure fire solution is to address both and the procedure is easy.

Since the filter is stainless steel, it can take the high temperatures of a stove top. Put the filter directly on the element and set to high for 10 minutes. This will burn off any coffee clogging the filter. After that, mix equal parts of water and vinegar in a pot, put the filter in and boil at max for 15 minutes.

This should do the trick. If it works for you, please click "yes" on "this is helpful", otherwise click "no". I searched for over a year to understand that my issue was a combination of two things so nothing worked for me. Clicking on yes/no would help the community understand if there are other unknown issues.

My breville filter baskets only have one true hole in the center of each basket. there are stampings in the metal so it looks like there's more, but the others aren't really holes b/c they were never drilled out. maybe breville subcontracted the manufacture of the filter baskets out and then didn't qc them; either way, one hole means keeping it clear is much more important. i plan to drill mine out (if i can find a small enough drill bit!) otherwise, after brewing a shot run only water thru the basket each time, or clear the hole out with a pen or needle. good luck!

My Breville BES820XL isn't steaming the milk. Instead it drips a little and then the steam comes out the shower head. Any idea what is causing this and how to fix it?

Maybe the end of the steam wand is clogged. Use the tool that comes with the maker to clean it. Do this with the coffee maker turned off.

I am on my 4th Breville CM9 Cappucino maker. The problem is always the same : after working perfectly for a few months the machine starts to produce clouds of steam, at first intermittently and then more...

Hi, I have had the same problem with these coffee makers the problem seems to be due to limescale inthe grey chamber where the coffee mixes with the milk the is a valve in the base that seems to get clogged buy some Oust liquid kettle descaler dont use powder type run the machine as making coffee with just water also in milk container and put some descaler and water in the water heater tank then run as cleaning but stop and start durng this eg knob forward then turn knob back as to charge with coffee then back to forward need to do this to open and close the valves to this a few times and the steaming should start to go back to normal run about 300 ml through the machine let it cool down then empty and rinse out the hot tank run a couple of cycles with clean water and the machine should work but it will choke up again in time if you ever find out how to get one of these machines apart please let me know. Beat Regards.

Water flows fine until we put in the Filter Holder

The grind on the coffee is too fine, try packing it lighter or setting the grind coarser.

Breville 800esxl won't extract coffee or steam milk.

is your machine new or is this a new problem? If you have had the machine for a while there is a possibility that your double wall filter is clog between the walls which would prevent the water from going through (this happens when your grind is too fine). If however the water does not go through when you do not have a filter in the basket than you have a diferent problem.

Machine wont draw any milk through

You are not supposed to put milk in the resevoir and run it through the machine. That's likely the problem. But like most parents you will continue to blame your child until he is totally alienated and your relationshio is an empty shell.

Cafe Roma Expresso/Cappucino machine

My understanding is that this is normal with units like the ESP8XL which use a pressurized portafilter. Non-pressurized units will leave a dry puck of used grounds.

Exploding........

Hi All. I too was having this so called exploding issue with my machine & couldn't get any coffee!! The culprit is a clogged filter!! As you might know, Breville uses a double wall construction for the filter which incorporates an inner cup with many fine holes and there is only ONE small hole on the bottom of the outer wall(bottom). I guess over time some fine fine grounds get thru the inner layer and accumulate between the two layers and eventually get compacted enough to completely clog the filter to a point that the pump cannot push the water through it!! Thus the pressure from the pump can't escape & is releasd when you try to remove the coffee basket!! You can try to use a small pin inserted in the bottom hole to see if it clears the obstruction. It didn't work for me! I even tried using high pressure air to clear it, again unsuccessful!
THE FIX: Buy a new filter!

P.S. I found my machine to have some build up behind the strainer where the water enters the coffee chamber. To clean and clear, follow these steps: Unplugg the power cord!! Remove the watertank. Remove the filter holder. Turn the machine upside-down, Remove ONE screw in the center of the coffee chamber(It looks like a strainer with several holes). Remove the strainer and wash & clean any build up behind it. Reinstall in reverse order.

Pressure but no water

Hi,

Make sure your filter is clean, take the filter and head it to light. If it is clean then you can see a little hole in the midle.
