All my computers in the house run ok. I even turned the computers off to see if there was an issue with the shared connection but still I couldn't connecto to Xbox Live

The reason to which your MTU is failing is becuase of a serious update by Microsoft. The whole dashboard and interactive elements are being changed entirely. See this link for further details.
http://www.xbox.com/en-US/live/nxe/

Down time can be up to 24 hours. So sit back and enjoy single player for today

Posted on Sep 29, 2008

My MTU has failed, too. I read up and apparently everyone's MTU fails at the same time when Microsoft takes down XBL to update it, fix it, etc. When they put XBL back up your MTU should work fine again. IT'S NOT YOUR PROBLEM! Blame the evil corporation of Microsoft who made you call your ISP for no reason. Down with the the Windows and Gates (Bill that is)!

I have the same problem....It states that my router MTU settings needs to change. or contact my ISP.
Now that i know everyone is having the same problem. I feel a little better. I think microsoft must be working on this issue as we type.

Xbox sent out a warning saying it would be down today. So just take it and be happy, they are supposed to be giving out a bunch of updates currently. so we have to wait until tomorrow to get on. Man I wanted some COD4 too. haha

Connecting router to xbox live

To change the router's MTU, do the following steps.

1. Open Internet Explorer and type http://192.1680.1.1 on the address bar
2. It will prompt you for username and password. By default, no username and password is admin. If the default password didn't work, try to type your own password for the router.
3. When you get to the setup page, under the Setup Tab, look for MTU. By default it is set to Auto 1500. Just click on Manual and set your preferred value.
4. Click on Save Settings at the bottom of the page.

You're all set.

MTU setting

Browse to the router's setup page, should be 192.168.1.1 or 192.168.1.0 and log into it. You just have to change the MTU. Put it to 1500.
Once logged in to the router, go to :

Setup
-
Basic Setup
-
Wireless Setup
-

Connection Type = Static IP
Internet IP Address = 192.168.0.1

Static DNS 1 = 192.168.0.1
Static DNS 2 = 192.168.0.1
Static DNS 3 = 192.168.0.1
STP = Enable

360 mtu test keeps failing

Access the routers setup page by typing 192.168.1.1 (ip address of the router) on the address bar on IE.

then on basic setup page at the bottom part of the page you will see MTU normally its on auto,
to change the value set it to manual. ask your isp what is their prefferred value for the mtu you can go as high as 1300 to 1500.

Connection problems

MTU stands for "Maximum Transmission Connection". Some routers and/or network gateways are incompatible with Xbox LIVE, while others may be compatible but merely need to have a setting changed. If you compare your router to the list of routers at the following web address, you can confirm whether or not your hardware has been confirmed as compatible with Xbox LIVE by Microsoft:

http://www.xbox.com/en-US/support/connecttolive/xbox360/homenetworking/equipment.htm

Whether or not your hardware is listed as compatible, it would still be a good idea to check your instruction manual for the hardware you are using and see how (if possible) to change the MTU settings. Microsoft suggests that the MTU setting should be 1364. Using untested hardware or hardware not listed as compatible may still work, however, future updates to LIVE may suddenly make your hardware incompatible, as updates to LIVE and the Xbox console are made to work with the specifications of tested and listed compatible routers and gateways.

Mtu

If you have your Xbox connected through a router, most routers, on their control panel (192.168.1.100 for example) give you the option of setting an MTU, or leaving it to default. This option is normally found on the setup page of your routers control panel.

MTU stands for maximum transmission unit, basically a speed thing.

If you can set it, change it to something above 1500 depending on how fast your internet connection is, but I am fairly certain that 1500 is the minimum that you would want to have set for xbox live.

Another way to do it is, if your router has this option, set the MTU to Automatic. That way your router (should) be able to do all of that dynamically as the need arises.

I hope this helps to solve your problem, good luck!

Hello my mtu is sayin its failed

The MTU(Maximum Transmission Unit) failure when testing the xbox's connection can be do to a few things because Xbox live requires a minimum MTU setting of 1364. Sharing a slower internet connection with other PC's in the house can cause this error, The incorrect MTU setting in your routers programming can cause this error, The lack of firmware updates to your router can cause this error, an older modem from your service provider can cause this. Old or worn network cables and jacks and or RG(coax) cables if you have cable internet could cause this. Your Router or gateway could be incompatible with Xbox live.

Try a direct connection to the Xbox without a router and reset your modem before doing it. If your able to connect then you know its the router. If not you know its the modem or cables or jacks or even your Xbox if you havent tested it elsewhere.
You can tell your ISP to mail you the newest updated modem... sometimes they will have a guy just drop one off.
