Be sure there isn't any aluminum in close proximity to your GPS antenna, or that your antenna is not to close to other powerful electronics. Aluminium reflects electromagnetic signals and other electronics emit EM fields as well causing disruption of your GPS signal reaching your antenna.

My Raystar 120 GPS keeps losing its fix.... the fix comes b ack a few minutes later, but then i lose it again. I have tried a cold restart, but the problem persists. Ideas?

Guys, most likely the litium battery is eol. Buy a new litium 3 volts battery for 3-4 euro's with soldering points . Use a pair of scissors, note the plus and minus side of the poles and carefully cut out the battery leaving enough metal to solder a replacement battery. Solder the replacement battery, and the problem is fixed. You're ready for another 6 years of fun saving 300 USD for a new GPS!

Rc435 works but looses it's fix periodically

The gates are to be removed only for surface mounting, and are there to prevent water ingress under the base. The cable would be crushed if the gate was not removed and the base was screwed onto the cable...
The antenna is powered from the base unit via the cable, but that's a simple DC circuit. The RF circuit is carried in the 'normal' way by the coax cable.
If you can clean the soldier from the scrunched fitting and get a good mechanical support, the soldier will provide the electrical contact. Be careful not to overheat the contact, and be sparing with the soldier when you reattach the braid. The braid is likely to be damaged / oxidized for some distance from the damage, so be sure you have enough slack in the cable. Raymarine's web site says you should see 4.8 / 7.2 Mega ohms of resistance across the antenna plug leads (different ohms depending on polarity of test leads) Good luck.
