Hi, Technically you should be having two switches (since you have fan as well as light to control).
If so, You should have about 4 wires on the ceiling.  They should be  1. Ground (bare copper or green) 2. Neutral (may be white) 3. Live1 (may be red) 4. Live2 (may be black)
Live1 and Live2 are the main wires which control fan and light separately.
Now, you have check the resistance between all 4 wires. You should get two pairs of wires showing resistance.

Connect Live1 and Live2 to one of these two paird and neutral to both of them.
Good luck.
Becareful while wiring. Make sure the wires arent live/hot.

The black almost always goes in the L. The others you'll have to play with. Also, you should know that this isn't the right switch for your fan.

No wiring diagram with fan ( hampton bay three speed fan with light)

white to white, black to black, blue to red, & green to ground.
If you don't have a second hot house wire(red), then put black & blue from fan to house black.

I need a wiring diagram of the Hampton Bay fan with light. The fan is black and white and the light has a blue wire. I believe the blue should be tied to the black, am I correct. Thanks

Twist the bare conductors together tightly, matching the black and blue ceiling fan wires to the black power wire, and the white ceiling fan wire to the white power wire, don't forget the green ground !!

blue would be your earth.
black and white are phase and neutral.

for the wiring in your roof you need to call a local sparky. just ask which is which and connect them appropriately.
