Question about Sapphire , AGP Video Card

1 Answer

GX270 with a ATI Radeon Sapphire x 1600 Pro Card machine not booting

I get not post beeps when I install my ATI Radeon Sapphire x 1600 Pro. I know that the AGP is 3.0 which means it supports 8x but the machine will not post at all. the system logs in the bios are empty. Not sure what to look at.

    I am online now yes

  • Preenchaser Sep 29, 2008

yes it is how I am currently running my machine. I have the bios set to AGP it will not post beep. Until I remove the card. Either way actually. I have set it to Auto and set it to onboard and it still will not post.

  • Preenchaser Sep 29, 2008

Yes and I have tried to change the settings in the bios for auto, onboard, or AGP only. I have also changed the maxium allowance for AGP memory since it was set to 128 at the time (it is not 256.)

  • Preenchaser Sep 29, 2008

yeah that works. I have done that and removed all the drivers for any other video card as well as updated the motherboard chipset drivers.

  • Preenchaser Sep 29, 2008

really what I was checking is that there is nothing that I missed trying to get this card to work. I just bought the card (fairly good price I think I paid $50 for it) and I was trying to see if it was me or the card just did not work so I needed to send it back?

  • Preenchaser Sep 29, 2008

It is all dell standard GX270 Optiplex but the mother board is a (I believe it says) Foxconn and it is a the standard 2.6Ghz which came with the machine.

  • Preenchaser Sep 29, 2008

    okay ready

  • Preenchaser Sep 29, 2008

there are no jumpers on the board at all it seems to be a jumperless board (motherboard). Now the video card has jumpers on it to change it from NTSC to PAL but I think your talking about the motherboard.

Thanks a ton I will try to flash the bios I believe I am out by 1 rev to be honest (slacking lately)

Set it to onboard, connect your cable to the onboard socket, remove your AGP card and boot to Windows.

Okay, hold on a minute. What motherboard do you have and what CPU is it designed for?

Shut your machine down to power off, remove the power cord. Have a flashlight nearby with the side case off the PC.

Remove the AGP card. Is there a jumper with two of three pins jumped? Which two, the two closest to the frame or furthers?

Yes, I was referring to the AGP card. Sounds right then. And, there is no oddball jumper on the board it seems.

AGP traffic is handled by the northbridge chipset via the southbridge depending on the board chipset. Do you know if this is Nvidia? and which generaltion.

My general conclusion is the AGP is bad, agreeing with you. However, you may only need a bios update. When you update a bios, be certain to backup the bios before flashing. You may already know this. So, before giving up on the card, and if you don't already have the latest bios flashed, get a new bios if there is one, flash it and try again, leaving the card in but running your system off the onboard chip.

Frankly, I doubt this will work, but in the interest of being thorough, which I have to be in my PC business, I would do this anyway.

The Optiplex line is a very good lineup from Dell and I've been an authorized Dell tech for over ten years. For the money you took the chance on for this card, you could attempt to get an RMA and fudge the fact that you've lost the receipts (from an online wholesaler like New Egg or ZipZoomFly) and see if they'll RMA a replacement.

The AGP cards I use now, are Nvidia chip based 6220s with at least 512MB of Ram. Not cheap new, but I got a good one off ebay for $49.

No sweat its worth the effort. The shoot for a RMA if you can get one. Otherwise, an Nvidia 6220 is a safe bet.

Good luck, nice working with you.
