Reformat an IBM NetVista desktop 8307

How can I reformat an IBM NetVista desktop 8307 without a disk? Is there any way? I got a virus. If I can reformat and install a virus protector, will I lose my MS Office or Windows XP?

    Thanks.

Amusedgeek, I installed Windows Live and it's working great! My computer is moving fast now! However, some other program installed itself and asks for money! It keeps "popping up." Otherwise, I'm good.

Some little blinking "caution" button goes away and comes back that keeps saying that I'm "infected" but the computer is working "great" besides this "pop-up" deal that I haven't been able to remove even from the Add and Remove Programs list on my computer, because I do not even SEE the program there!

Amusedgeek, the Windows Live that I have will not remove it? Again, the computer is working great. I've just get annoying pop-ups every so often. Thanks!

I ran a complete scan and no malicious software was found! This is strange.

  • bgmestman Sep 29, 2008

I took a nap and about 12 windows of "nonsense" opened.

Eagle, I think you have it right. I'll try to download something. Thanks.

I did download Spybot. The ONLY thing that's "bugging me" - that keeps "popping up" every few minutes or so is something called "WAV" and it stsaWindows A V - Security Center, Windows Antivirus. It's annoying!

Lesser of the time, I'm actually also getting a little yellow "caution" like symbol and the bottom of my screen and it reads: "Your system is probably infected with latest version of Spyware.CyberLog-X."

It is a malicious av program that is trying to trick you into buying it. I have seen many like this. A classic example is the IE antivirus. The worst part is it has a website and looks almost like genuine antivirus. Download and install an anti-spyware/malware tool. There are lots of good ones like Spybot search and destroy, spyhunter etc., Also if you can get me a bit more info about the pop-up it will be easier for me to help you out.
Regards,
Eagle.

Ah but this claims to be an antivirus - how would it look if your antivirus went around removing "the competition"? Besides, it is not really an infection in the classic virus definition. It does not infect existing files, in installs it own and it usually does it using polymorphic technology. The names of the files used changes at random as it spreads.

A reformat wipes out everything, windows, office, all your documents, pictures, music - everything. You will have a blank hard drive.

What is the virus you have and what have you done to try and get rid of it?

That popup is a piece of malicious software that anti-virus programs have a difficult time removing because it usually hooks dll files to explorer (your desktop), winlogon, lsass and a host of other programs. It can be removed manually but it is not a quick or easy process.

Starts then reboots

Try to use other anti-virus programs, there maybe viruses that your previous cleaner can't detect. If that wont solve your problem it is best to reformat your pc then install a new operating system, just be sure to backup your data first.

How to get a new driver installer

Using another pc, download the driver for the model of LAN card used. Goto the control panel - system - device manager and unistall the card (keep hardware attached to pc) and reboot. Use the downloaded driver to reuninstall. When it gets back online, do the same thing with any other device not working. Be sure to get the drive for the operating system used.
