There is no transformer in the dryer, i am guessing you have a 110 v motor and when you hooked the plug wrong, you could have supplied the motor with 220 v that's why you can smell something burnt.

the heater is 220 volts. regular dryer has dual voltage supply. 110 v and 220 volts.

it is fixable if you know how to replace and test the motor. do some testing first before you buy the parts because if you are not sure, then it would be a waste to replace a working part.

if you are not sure you can do it, then the best thing is to call a technician.
    please do rate the solution.

    tnx 4 using fixya,

Maytag Neptune Dryer model MDG5500AWW. The lights go on but dryer will not start and it smells like burning plastic or rubber. Maybe a wire.

Do a continuity check on thermal fuse and also check your breaker for the dryer recepticle to make sure you have power going to the dryer

My maytag neptune dryer makes a grinding sound, and

I have no clue about the grinding but most likely the smell is burning lint. I'd recommend vacuuming out as much lint as you can. The better choice is open case and vacuum all of the lint.

Maytag neptune gas dryer was purchased in 1998. Had matching pair. Washer went long agodue to faulty transmission. dryer just went a little while ago. Basically when i press start it doesnt want to start...

If the motor is not burnt up you will need to change the capacitor on the motor it energizes the motor to start up and should be on the side of the motor. Presently it is single phasing or just turning over and not getting all of the power it needs.

Maytag Neptune MDE3000AYW. The start button on my dryer went out. It tried to start and then died and smelled burnt. I am guessing the switch burned up. Any thoughts on how to fix it? Thanks

sounds like motor is in a bind see if you can rotate drum by hand if you cant then your belt is hung up,or a belt pully is bad,if drum turns freely, sound like motor is going bad

Maytag Neptune Dryer with strong "burned electrical wiring" smell

Sounds like the motor went out. Before trying to start it it needs to be inspected. If you are not comfortable opening up the cabinet then I would would recommend calling a service tech. If you need further assistance please let me know.

Wont start, smells like something is burniing

if its electric burning smell, its either a overheating motor, capacitor or both or burnt connections, sounds like a motor problem,it will be very hot to touch if its failing, check capacitor though as it could be causing motor to overheat, rating of cap is on side

When I push the start button on my maytag neptune dryer it sounds

MORE TIMES THAN NOT, WHEN I HAVE SEEN THIS PROBLEM, IT TAKES A NEW MOTOR TO CORRECT THIS SITUATION. MAKE SURE EVERYTHING MOVES FREELY BEFORE CONDEMNING THE MOTOR THOUGH.
