The iPod will stop itself from charging when the battery is full, and will not overcharge. I'm pretty sure you can't disconnect the power to the iPod (would stop it from charging) and still use the Audio to your stereo.

SOURCE: DPX-501 LCD Repair

I got the new display part from the Kenwood supplier on LI, NY but there are dozens of pins on lining both sides of the display, each 1/16" from the other. I don't have confidence in my ability to detach the old and solder the new to the main board without further disaster.

Choices for me now are:

- continue "flying blind" - most likely solution for the moment.
- pay someone to do it - includes removal and being without a head unit for an unspecified time, plus cost.
- replace - I'd like to change brands although it means replacing the Kenwood satellite unit too, so more cost.

This hasn't been a good advertisement for Kenwood. People are impressed by the sound in my car, but not so much by the blank screen, guesswork changing stations etc.

I really like the unit, and the display was great while it worked: exactly as long as the warranty. I can't recommend Kenwood.

SOURCE: UNLOCK SECURITY CODE

for your kdc-mp528 will work whith code KCAR entered from the remote

Common Kenwood Security Codes
Many Kenwood radios are configured with the same security codes:

KCAR - This seems to be a "backdoor" to some Kenwood models.
3051 - This is the security code which is printed in the manual of many Kenwood models.
1234 - This is a security code commonly chosen by Kenwood owners.
Entering Your Kenwood Security Code
If the car battery fails or is disconnected, the Kenwood will ask for the security code.

The procedure to enter your security code differs on various models of Kenwood car stereos. Here are three of the more common procedures:

Type 1
During the code request mode, while holding the DISP key depressed, press and hold the Volume UP or DOWN key for 3 seconds until the "..." display disappears.
Enter the security code using your Kenwood remote.
Type 2
Press and hold the "Auto" button and "Track up" (next track button on the right) on the face of radio at the same time until the four dash lines disappear.
Enter the security code using your Kenwood remote.
Type 3: Model# DPX-4020 and DPX-4030
Press and hold the 1 then the 6 preset keys until the display shows the letter 'C'.
Enter the security code using your Kenwood remote.
Entering Letters on your Kenwood Remote
To enter a letter using your Kenwood remote, press a button once for the first letter, twice for the second letter, and three times for the third letter -- then press the Track Up or Next Track key to send the letter.

To send the letter 'A', press the 2 key once and then press the Track Up key. To send the letter 'B', press the 2 key twice and then press the Track up key.

Finally, when you are done entering all of the letters, press and hold the Track Up button for 3 seconds.

The key sequence to enter the security code KCAR is:

5
5
Track Up
2
2
2
Track Up
2
Track Up
7
7
Track Up
Your Kenwood should then enter tuner mode.

A Security Code Bug in some Kenwoods
There is a reported bug in the security code handling of some Kenwood stereos. In models with thie bug, the security code is stored incorrectly. The workaround is to enter the wrong security code.

In models with this bug, you have to decrement the third character of the security code by one. If your security code was 1111, you would enter your security code as 1101. If your security code was 9999, you would enter 9989.

i hope this works for you.

I just solved the problem with my kenwood dpx mp 2090U - (looks similar with 501). FL Display with single CD, USB, 2 Din.
I should share this......... as I received the clue from someone that share the same case to me . Thanks to Mr,Nasirbaek from Indonesia,
The problem is at the main board . Dry (bad) soldering occurred. There are more then 5 resistors in series configuration. The resistor is quiet big (1.5mm x 3.5 mm, surface mount type R) about 2,7Ohms.The position is start from near usb port cable and ended to near big transistor (1 x 1.5 cm power transistor). After resoldering check with multitester to make sure that all R are connected in series configuration.
Just open 3 screws to access the main board. 1 at the top case. 2 at cd assembly, then Carefully take out the CD and the CD ribbon cable.
good luck.

Thanks Robotek. Here is what worked for me- the differences is in how you enter...

Hi there, there is a standard procedure we use to bypass the code when we have the gear on the test bench for repair. Try this and it should sort out your problem

You need the remote control to do this, if you don't have one, then you may need to go to a KENWOOD agent and get them to clear the code for you, or purchase one for your use.

KENWOOD KDC SECURITY CODE CLEAR procedure

Your code number is 5227 (KCAR)

* Press numeric key “5” ( 2 times ) and press the Track UP/Next Track key
* Press numeric key “2” ( 3 times ) and press the Track UP/Next Track key
* Press numeric key “2” ( 1 time ) and press the Track UP/Next Track key
* Press numeric key “7” ( 2 times ) and press the Track UP/Next Track key

Your radio will require one of the following procedures.

Type 1
During the code request mode, while holding the DISP key depressed, press and hold the Volume UP or DOWN key for 3 seconds (so that “…” disappears).
Then using your remote enter your code.

Type 2
Press the "Auto" button and "Track up" on face of radio at the same time. The four dash lines ( . . . . ) should "disappear".

Then using your remote enter your code.

Type 3
Model# DPX-4020 and DPX-4030
Press and hold the 1 then the 6 preset key (preset keys are the buttons on face of radio for storing you "favorite" radio stations). "C" should display.
Then using your remote, enter your code.

Enter your number from the remote control unit.

The security is canceled and the set enters the TUNER mode!

:) POSITIVE FEEDBACK :)
A FixYa rating would be fantastic for helping you out with this techo tip.:)

DPX-501 Root Menu Help

I emailed Kenwood USA and they gave me the number to an authorized Kenwood service center on the east coast( New Jersey). I sent them the receiver, and within 2 days they sent it back completely fixed. They even fixed an error code I didn't even know wasn't working. Price on the repair will vary depending on the problem. If it is fairly new and still under warranty then there should not be any cost to repair it.
