I can't format my pen drive how can I format my pen drive

Hi,
there may be a small sliding switch that could be set to "Protect" ie the drive is protected from formatting, or deleting or even adding files.
Change the position and then re-insert the drive into your computers USB port. Go to My Computer, right click the pen drive and select "Format"
FAT32 format will give you a drive that is readable and compatible with Windows 95, Win98, Win2000, XP etc.
You can format in NTFS format but it will only be readable by Win2000,XP or Vista or Win7.
Cheers,
Steve

External USB driven hard disc not recognized Windows XP-

Once the device has installed all drivers open "My Computer" and see if it even shows the drive. If the hard drive came with any installation software install it before attaching the drive. Make sure all cables are attached including the power cable if it came with one. One main thing to also check is that the drive is directly in a port by itself and not on a hub with other items. The only other problem may be that is the drive is too large (1TB) to be recognized and then you can google a patch that will allow it to be recognized. If none of this works the last option would be to allow your pc to format the drive and see if that helps.

Hi there, I think it may be to do with the format of the harddrive - see if you used the Maxtor in a Windows XP environment it would have been formatted to suit that OS.

Purchased Maxtor ONE TOUCH III. when I had XP. Now that I have Vista, mAXTOR DOESN'T RECOGNIZE IT. iS THERE AN UP-DATE? nEED HELP. Thanks Marty xmartico@san.rr.com

Hey xmartico,

If your recent update from Windows XP to Windows Vista has been the only major change to your computer system since you could access your Maxtor One Touch III last, you may simply need to reinstall the Maxtor software to resolve the problem.

Information provided by the manufacturer has suggested that if no password was ever set, the hard drive should work with Vista immediately with no additional work required. If you had chosen a password however, you may need to reinstall the software and reboot every time you disconnect/shut down the external drive, or disable your user account control (UAC). Please keep in mind though that disabling UAC is strongly discouraged, as it may open your computer to attacks by various malware programs including viruses and spyware.

If you're still not quite sure how to proceed, I would strongly recommend contacting Maxtor directly for further assistance.

Hope this helps you out.

Sincerely,
Aaron

Maxtor basics external drive

Hi Nuisance101, I recall your running vista. Vista is a nightmare. If you cound only see the troubles we see on a daily basis here at FixYa you'ed understand. It's a common problem with Vista not seeing USB devices, externial devices. It does & then the next second it doesn't. Same for all external devices. I'm am 100% sure the trouble is not your system or your devices. It's Vista. I have gone over dozens of post from vista users. One would think MS has been on vacation since the release of vista. You can look at vista's web site for help for a possible fix, at this link. (I have no faith). MS blames driver software. Your Maxtor drive is external. Henve no driver software.
So it falls into that vista area of one time vista see's the drive & the next it does not.
Either way I though Maxtor addressed vista issues. I prefer Seagate drives myself. Personally know lots of people who's Maxtor's drives have just gone down for no reason. Seagate bought Maxtor.

Most of the post from vista users, claim users should check vista's updates often. Since Max Blaster did its job, I'm inclined to blame vista.

I wish I could give you a better fix or suggestion but I'm up against vista. That's why I run WinXP Pro. I do not have these problems.

Best wishes Nuisance101!
Mike

Maxtor Can't Touch

I understand the problem you are going through and it is due to the fact that win xp sp2 install an NTFS filesytem on its hard drive and this file system was designed to be secure in a way that you don't remove disk drive or add disk drives just like that. Now the best solution would be to just reinstall you xp machine with sp2 with the hard drive already in the case.In this way xp will be able to recognize it as one of its own drives and now you will have access to it.
