Question about Maytag Neptune FAV6800AW Top Load Washer

1 Answer

FAV6800AW od code

Hello- I have the same issue I saw you address. I know the little grey plastic "lock" on the left is broken. Are there any "go arounds," or do I have to call the repairman? I really don't have the money for a costly repair currently. This couldn't happen at a worse time. I appreciate any help you have to offer. Thank You. Gina

"od" means The lid has not been opened for the last three completed cycles
There are two lid lock assy's on this bird. If you're going to "go around" them no servicer will want to know

Washer will not start , od code is showing on the panel

You have lost signaling from the Left Hand Lid lock.

The OD code is sent out from the Console main control board when a lid open is not sensed via the signaling from the Left Hand Lid lock for three completed wash cycles.

Display shows OP but unable to clear , checked out switch, 1 contact pin was heavily corroded. I polished it up but made no difference

If you place a magnet over the left hand grey bumper will this clear the OP error code with the washer lid up? If so you have a lid magnet out of position.
See page 35 of the FAV6800A/FAV9800A Service Manual for the location.

Did you remove the left hand lid lock cover and inspect the connections on the magnetic reed relay?

Check to see if the leads on the magnetic reed relay are connected. This pic shows the black lead broken from one end of the magnetic reed relay. This will produce loss of signaling to the Control Board and generate an OP error code.

I discuss troubleshooting for the OD error code. You troubleshoot the OP error code in a similar fashion.

Why does it say "op" when i press the start button?

The Service Manual for reference. Sears Parts Direct for reference.

I feel you have lost signaling from the Left Hand Lid Lock for Lid is Open/ Lid is Closed.

First check is to place a magnet over the Left Hand grey bumper and while watching the LED display see if the OP error code clears. If it does you have a lid magnet out of position. See the Service Manual for access to the Lid Magnet.

See Pic;

If an external magnet over the Left Hand grey bumper doesn’t clear the OP error code with the lid open then See this Link for troubleshooting Left Hand Lid Lock Troubleshooting. I discuss the OD error code but the OP error code troubleshooting is very similar. If the lid Magnet is not out of position then I feel you have a broken lead at the Magnetic Reed relay or severe corrosion issues with the Left Hand Lid Lock preventing Lid Open/Lid Closed status signaling to the Control Board in the Console.

WASHER WILL NOT WORK - CODE od APPEARS ON WASHER AND IT BEEPS - WILL NOT DO ANYTHING

I feel you have lost Lid Open/Lid Closed signaling to the Control Board from the Left Hand Lid Lock assembly. If you remove the Left Hand lid lock assembly I believe you will find a broken wire to the magnetic read relay or severe corrosion on the input and output pins in the Left Hand Lid Lock assembly.

Take a look at this link Left Hand Lid Lock Troubleshooting and see if it will help with troubleshooting and repair.

You will find a part number for the Left Hand lid lock and parts supply vendor links if you decide to purchase the Left Hand Lid lock.

I would do some troubleshooting by removing the Left Hand Lid lock and inspecting before a part purchase………Rich

Hello inezfragala,

If you are only throwing the OD error code to the Console and you can’t clear it I feel you have a broken lead on the magnetic reed relay switch or severe pin/plug corrosion in the left hand lid lock. See the pic’s be low. Next Question do you want to DIY or call in a service repair company.

The FAV6800AW/FAV9800AW Service Manual for reference. Sears Parts Direct for reference.

If you want to DIY the fix I would start by removing the Left Hand Lid Lock. Follow the Service Manual page 34 Lid Lock/Reed Switch Removal.

The technicians thumb is on the Left Hand Lid Lock assembly. The Left Hand Lid Lock assembly is not a sealed very well and is subject to corrosion issues with its location near the bleach dispenser. If you are a DIY’er you won’t have any problem getting to the Left Hand Lid Lock assembly.

Unplug the 120VAC to your machine and follow the manual to raise the washer top from the base. The mating plug can be very difficult to remove from the assembly. Remove the 5/16 sheet metal screw holding the lid lock to the washer top. Once loose you can press the tabs and pull the mating plug from the socket pins in the Lid Lock. Be careful when you open the case halves of the Left Hand Lid lock assembly it’s very easy to damage those retaining tabs. Work very slowly with a small flat blade jewelers screwdriver or similar. If you have heavy corrosion issues you can clean up with WD-40 and some finger nail emery file board on the pins in the Left Hand Lid Lock.

If you need to replace the left lid lock here is the part number 25001048 or here another link.

Check to see if the Black and Red wires are on the magnetic reed relay switch solder connections have not broken loose from corrosion. They can be re-soldered back on if they have broken loose. If you have heavy corrosion in the Left Hand Lid Lock assembly and can’t clean up to clear the error code I would replace the Left Lid Lock. There is a possibility that the signaling is lost from the Left lid Lock plug back threw the machines wiring harness. This would require advanced troubleshooting using a DVM to trace +12VDC from the Control Board Back to the Control Board thru the L.H. Lid Lock. Don’t go near the Control Board with a DVM set to measure resistance/continuity you could destroy your Control Board.

Big time corrision issues with L.H. Lid Lock.

Broken wire on magnetic reed relay will cause OD alarm and you won't be able to clear.

This how the L.H. Lid Lock should look.

The OD code will not clear

The Service Manual for reference. Sears Parts Direct for reference

od alarm means the Control Board has not seen a lid open condition for three complete wash cycles. I suspect the left lid lock and or lid magnet issue.

First check to see if you can clear the od error with an external magnet as shown in this picture.

Pic of left bumper and a external magnet;

39bbb30.jpg

If it does then you have a lid magnet out of position. You will need go thru the process to disassemble the lid and check that the lid magnet is in position. First picture on page 35 of the SM shows the lid magnet.

You could have an issue with the left lid lock with corrosion and a possible open lead on the reed relay in the left lid lock. See the broken black wire connection as shown in this Pic

37f3013.jpg

In the interim you could power down the machine by removing the 120VAC power cord from you wall receptacle then re-power up. That may give you three more wash cycles before the od alarm is triggered again. If the magnetic reed relay lead is open as shown this may cause a OP alarm to the console.

Od error code

Maytag's service center emailed me back saying that I needed to purchase a magnet for the right side of the lid, even after I sent them photos of the lid. There is no magnet on the right side, so don't be fooled! The lid comes apart fairly easily. First, with a screwdriver, apply a little downward pressure and pry out the center liquid/powder holder. It is hinged on the bottom and will come right out. Next, pull out on the bottom corners and the lid liner will come straight down. Now you can verify that the magnet (on the left side!) is there and seated correctly. If that is the case, go ahead and reassemble. Unplug the washer. Lift up the top portion of the washer (at the crease). You may need a screwdriver to pry up on it. I didn't. I just pulled up on it. It comes up fairly easily. Now you can see the locks, mounted with one bolt on either side. Inspect the wiring for any wear or damage. Next, remove the locks one at a time, unhook the wire connector and plug them back in. Reassemble. Leave the lid up (not sure if it matters, but I did) and plug the washer back in. That's all I did and it worked! The "od" alarm didn't come back.
