GE S-Series Side-by-side refrigerator

My GE side-by-side is in trouble. The freezer is not working, while the 'frig side works Ok so far as I can see.

The foil tag reads : Model ZISW42DSC, Serial No. ML037182, "Listed 72RO". It is a side-by-side in stainless steel with the compressor on top that is commonly mistaken for a sub-zero.

I let the heat exchanger clog with dust, so the whole t hing stopped working. I vacuumed that out and right away it got back on track, dropping both refrigerator and freezer back into proper temperature. However within a day or two the freezer thawed itself back out.

Any ideas?

The plot thickens. One of the posts here suggested that it might be a bad temperature control unit. So I cycled the temperature dial (located in the refrigerator) to zero and back up a couple of times. Each time I reached zero, I heard the compressor stop running, then start again as soon as the dial was above zero. Now the ice cube tray I put in there as a test is frozen solid. Am I done? Problem fixed? Or just waiting to loom up and defrost my freezer again when I'm not looking?

In cases where the freezer temperatures range between
minus 20°F and minus 35°F, and the fresh food temperatures
are constant or range intermittently between normal and 60°F,
the fresh food damper may be stuck in the closed position. In
this case, the sealed system will continue to run, attempting to
cool the fresh food compartment. This will cause sub-zero
temperatures in the freezer compartment and may lead to
freezing in the icemaker fill tube.
The damper may have failed to close, failed to open, or may
be only partially open. To correct this situation, replace the
fresh food damper. For your model, use WR09x10084.

My refrigerator stopped cooling and my freezer stopped freezing but the freezer is still cooling

Same thing with our GE Eterna Series - off and on for the last two weeks. Took back panel off, looked around, vacuumed dust build up off of the fan blades, etc.; everything worked fine for five good days. Then frig went out stopped cooling. Off and on for the last week. Unplugging it works for a day then back to not freezing and or colling.

I have a frigidaire gallery series frig side by side with ice and water in door. The frig part won't stay cold. It also seems to take long time to make ice. The frig part works ok for awhile and then...

Check for two things. Look under the refrigerator and make sure the compressor fan is turning.

Second, check inside the freezer for proper operation of the fan that moves cool air throughout the freezer and refrigerator. If this fan is working, you can probably hear it. It should be behind an access plate in the freezer (near the top). Remove the plate and look at the fan. If it's not turning, you will have to replace the fan motor.

Bad defrost timer, most likely. It is not defrosting the evaporator, and therefore, no air can be passed over it. Hope this helps

Frig side is not cooling.

Check if there is frost on the back wall of the freezer, if so it is not defrosting. Many GE fridges need a new defrost heater every couple of years. If it's not defrosting, you can get by for a while by unplugging the fridge and leaving the freezer door open for 24 hrs, then plugging back in.
