Windows cannot load the device driver for this hardware. The driver may be corrupted or missing. (Code 39)

Because of this error, the drive did not show up in My Computer and the customer was unable to burn CDs or read any CDs.

I uninstalled the drive from Device Manager, rebooted the computer, and the problem remained, so obviously it appeared to be a registry issue that I would have to solve. If you are receiving this Code 39 error and your CD or DVD drive is missing and has a yellow exclamation mark in Device Manager, I hope this information is useful. To solve this Code 39 error, follow these instructions:

1) Close all open programs

2) Click on Start, Run, and type REGEDIT and press Enter

3) Click on the plus signs (+) next to the following folders
  • HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE
  • SYSTEM
  • CurrentControlSet
  • Control
  • Class
  • {4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}
4) This folder is the DVD/CD-ROM Drive Class Description in the registry. Look for any of the following names in the right hand column.

  • UpperFilters
  • LowerFilters
  • UpperFilters.bak
  • LowerFilters.bak
5) If any of the above keys shown in step 4 are listed, right-click on them and choose Delete

6) After deleting the keys, close the Registry Editor

7) Reboot your computer

8) Open My Computer and check to see if your CD or DVD drives have returned. You may also want to open Device Manager and verify that the yellow exclamation and error code on the CD or DVD drive is gone.

Notebook DVD is not working

You need to take the drive out and put it back in. Try doing a BIOS update if one is available or simply reinstall the Operating System. If this does not work either then you will have to replace the DVD drive.

I had the same error code. There weren't any mention of any fixes for this code. So, tried the solution mentioned at PCHell (http://www.pchell.com/hardware/cd_drive_error_code_39.shtml) for the error code 39. Ran through the usual things before, like trying to update the driver and deleting and reinstalling the device--no avail. In my registry, only had to delete the Upper Filter and Lower Filter, no .bak in listing. I did not re-delete the hardware prior to editting the registry, rather left it listed in the Device Manager, with the yellow triangle/exclaimation point. Haven't tried to burn and cd or dvd, but, at least I can now view a dvd. One step at a time. Good Luck. Paul

Code 39 for dvd drive

You can solve this problem by going to start, then run, type regedit. open hkey_local_machine, then system, then control, then class, then 4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318, once in this go over to the right hand side and delete upper filters and then lower filters. restart your computer and your dvd/cd-rom drive will work properly, if you look in device manager there will no longer be a question mark and it will tell you all is working correctly.

Nowhere does that item exist on SONY's support page.

If so, it may no loger be supported....
