When you first start a load, the machine does perform several self checks. One of them is the door lock test. It locks the door and checks a loop back signal from the lock. At this point, it usually tests the drain pump to make sure it cycles on and off. In my case, the Maytag unit we own actually unlocks the door and immediately locks it again right before the actual wash cycle begins. I suppose this is a double check because if the door indicates it is unlocked, the washer won't do anything (like fill up with water, or spin...anything that either floods the room and hurts somebody). The door switch should be the impetus to start the tests. If the switch is mounted to an adjustable bracket, or the bracket is loose, then maybe it is being pushed out of position when you close the door. The fact that you can open the door after it unlocks, re-close it and the machine works normally tells me there is adjustment that needs to be made. Either the the little lever or pin that actuates the switch is bent or broken, or the door needs to be adjusted on its hinges to get the pin aligned correctly. Hope this helps. Keep us posted.
Your Maytag Neptune Washing Machine displays error codes, also called "help codes," to identify specific problems with your washer. Once you close your Maytag Neptune's door, the machine locks the door, goes through the selected wash cycles and unlocks the door when the laundry is finished. Error codes appear when there are problems with the door, the inflow and drainage of water and the motor. The "FL" code indicates that the washing machine was unable to lock the door after you closed it. Open and close the door tightly, then restart the washing cycle. If you need to open the door. Maytag's Neptune washer has a latch and lock on the door. If this lock fails to open when the cycle is finished. You can rescue your clothes by: 1) Remove the bezel from the soap/bleach/fabric softener dispenser. 2) Locate the red cord near the right front corner of the dispenser opening. Pull on this red cord. This will unlatch the door so you can rescue your laundry. Then call for service.
Please see the following Whirlpool / Maytag service manual for Neptune washers. https://secured.whirlpool.com/Service/SrvTechAdm.nsf/2cd44500d572193285256a45004fd9d6/dc59d905140253e18525729c005765f4/$FILE/Maytag_Neptune_Washer.pdf
On page 3-1 the manual explains that if the washer shuts off during the spin cycle, the problem points to a weak spring in the door lock mechanism.
"Shuts OFF In The Middle Of The Spin Cycle: During the spin cycle, the machine control monitors the door lock mechanism to ensure the door is locked. This is done through the door lock enable switch. During "lock mode," the shaft of the door lock mechanism is pressed forward by the door lock wax motor, and the shaft presses in the button of the door lock enable switch. If the machine control board sees the switch OPEN during the spin cycle, the machine control board will automatically shut the washer OFF. This is caused by a weak spring in the door lock wax motor. Replace the complete door lock mechanism.
