Question about Whirlpool GD2SHGX Refrigerator
I have a whirlpool side by side. When the water dispenser is pushed you can hear it try to work (a humming or pumping sound) but nothing comes out. I don't know how to get the unit off the door to see if there is a blockage. No water leaks out any where when the dispenser is pushed and the ice maker still works fine. Can you tell me what to check, where it is and how to get to it?
Welcome to fixya.
I'm Huuum and happy to assist you,
You said, When the water dispenser is pushed you can hear it try to work (a humming or pumping sound) but nothing comes out.
Below is a list of reasons that the water may not be working that are easily checked and remedyed by you! Is there a water shut off on your fridge? If so the dispensor will still make noise as if it is trying, even if it is locked!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
1. When did you change the internal water filter last?
You can remove the water filter and still use the water dispenser to check if the filter may be the problem! If nothing changes reinsert the water filter.
2.Flushing the water system after replacing filter
Use a sturdy container to depress the water dispenser bar until
the water begins to flow. Flush the water system by dispensing
and discarding 2 to 3 gal. (8 to 12 L) of water. Cleaning the
system will take approximately 6 to 7 minutes and will help clear
air from the line. Additional flushing may be required in some
NOTE: As air is cleared from the system, water may spurt out of
The dispenser lock (on some models)
Your dispenser can be turned off for easy cleaning or to prevent
accidental dispensing by small children and pets. To turn off the
dispenser, press the LOCK button. The indicator will appear
above the LOCK button and the ice and water dispensers will not
work. To unlock the dispenser, press the UNLOCK button until
the indicator appears. Then continue to dispense ice or water as
NOTE:********** The lock feature does not shut off power to the product,
to the ice maker, or to the dispenser light. It simply deactivates
the dispenser levers.
4.The water dispenser will not operate properly
Has the water system not filled? The water system needs
to be filled the first time it is used. Use a sturdy container to
depress the water dispenser bar until the water begins to
flow. Flush the water system by dispensing and discarding
2 to 3 gal. (8 to 12 L) of water. Cleaning the system will take
approximately 6 to 7 minutes and will help clear air from the
line. Additional flushing may be required in some households.
See the “Water and Ice Dispensers” section.
Is the water shutoff valve not turned on or the water line
connected at the source? Make sure the water shutoff valve
is turned on and the water source is connected to the
refrigerator. See the “Water Supply Connection” section.
Is the water shutoff valve clogged or incorrectly installed?
See the “Water Supply Connection” section. If clogging or
installation is not a problem, call for service or contact a
Is there a kink in the home water source line? If you find or
suspect a kink in the water line, call for service.
Is there a water filter installed on the refrigerator? The
filter may be clogged or incorrectly installed. First, check the
filter installation instructions to ensure that the filter was
installed correctly and is not clogged. If installation or
clogging is not a problem, call for service.

I used to have a problem just like that where the water would not come out but the ice would. The cause for my problem was that the water was frozen inside the pipes therefore no water was coming out. The solution was that I unpluged the refrigerator overnight and in the morning it would work again.

Be sure to turn off the water valve before you start.
The water tube is probably kinked at the front lower left corner. Take the front lower grill off of the refrigerator and open the left door (freezer) and see if the translucent plastic tube is kinked where it comes from the bottom of the refrigerator and goes up into the door.
If it is, there is plenty of tubing to allow you to pull it out of the connector at the corner and cut off the kinked part and re-insert the tube.
Turn the water valve back on.
(This was the problem with my fridge and I had to show the Sears technician. He had already told me to call a plumber and get a dedicated water line due to low water pressure! Imagine the cost if I had believed him. Works great - good flow and no leaks.)
Hope this helps.

Ice will not dispense out of of the door

Check the water filter - it should be at the bottom of the fridge - turn it 1/2 turn to the left. After several months of use (less if you use it a lot) the filter can clog.

Tammi, you first want to check to make sure the water inlet tube to the icemaker is not frozen shut. Next, get yourself a jumper wire about 4 inches long with the ends stripped exposing the wire on each end. Pull off the ice maker cover, it will pull right off. Now you are looking at the module. On the module, left side, you will see two test points marked V and L. Insert one end of the jumper wire into V and the other marked L. You are now sending 120 volts to the water valve and water should fill the ice maker providing the inlet tube is not frozen over. If it doesn't fill, you either have a bad water valve or module itself. Also check to see if the clips that hold the center gear on the module are not broken. Catriver..post back.

Most likely a problem with the main ice making unit itself. I bought mine at ebay for $49 including shipping. Very simple to replace. You just swap the wiring harness and bottom plate. Takes about 20 minutes to do.
Make sure you do the IR led test. If you think you IR sender and receiver are bad to, $57 on ebay for the set. Most likely not your water solenoid in the lower back of frig (it gets the signal to turn on from the receiver module of the IR board.
Probably not your water filter (cuz the front water dispenser still probably works right?)
And probably not a clogged or frozen line.
Good luck. When it doubt, trust ebay!

SOURCE: ice maker not dispensing ice
If the dispensor light switches to cubed or crushed , the panel is good . Remove the ice bin , and hold the light switch in . Press the arm for CRUSHED ice , and if you hear a buzzing or hum , then the auger motor is frozen . Use a hair dryer directly on the " forks " for a while , ocasionally holding switch and activating arm , until the forks move . Lower the freezer temp slightly and reinstall the ice bin .
