Magnavox 51MP392H -- Multipoint Converge blue faded around edges

I recently replace the ICs for my 51MP392H to remove blue "3-D" like shadows.  The replacement worked to solve that issue, but now the blues and whites appear washed out.  When trying to adjust the multipoint converge, the symbols look blue in the center of the screen, but green towards the outside.  When watching TV or a movie, the whites look okay in the center, but yellow towards the outside edges.  All blues look a little "off."  Is this just a CRT issue, or could it be something else?

Sounds like you have a grayscale problem. Did you use a soldering gun when replacing the parts? Did you turn the TV? Sometimes just turning the set off and letting it cool down will automatically degauss it when you turn it back on. Do you have the service manual? If so let me know where you got it as I'm looking for one. The manual should tell you how to adjust purity and grayscale. If not, mark the screen controls for each tube and turn off two of them to check the purity of each CRT. If there is a purity problem you will need to degauss the set and mark the position of magnets on the neck of each. A white paint pen will do. Adjusting the magnets can be tricky and will affect the convergence so you could end up with a bigger problem. Good luck.

I have a Philips 51PW9303 Rear Projection TV that had blue shadows around the sides of the screen and now has a green and red bowed line at bottom. Does I need a convergence board to solve this?

If the following doesn't work the tubes could be at the end of life:
Adjusting convergence:
Note: For best results, the Projection TV needs to be turned on for 15 minutes or longer before adjusting the picture tubes (convergence).

To adjust the convergence of the picture tubes:
  1. Press the 'MENU/SELECT' button on the remote.
  2. Press CURSOR RIGHT to enter the PICTURE menu.
  3. Use CURSOR DOWN and RIGHT to select and enter MANUAL CONVERGE.
  4. Press CURSOR RIGHT to select CONVERGE RED or press CURSOR RIGHT and DOWN to select CONVERGE BLUE.
  5. A crosshair will be shown on the screen. If there is any red or blue fringe around the crosshair, use CURSOR RIGHT, LEFT, UP, DOWN to try and merge the fringe colors with the crosshair.
  6. Press the 'MENU/SELECT' button to return to MANUAL CONVERGE menu.
  7. Press the 'EXIT' button to exit the menu.
If you are satisfied with the convergence you may stop now. Otherwise, you can continue and adjust the convergence more using mult ipoint convergence.
To Adjust multipoint convergence:
  1. Press the 'MENU/SELECT' button on the remote.
  2. Use CURSOR RIGHT to enter the PICTURE menu.
  3. Use CURSOR DOWN and RIGHT on the cursor ring to select and enter MANUAL CONVERGE.
  4. Press CURSOR RIGHT and DOWN on the cursor ring to select MULTIPOINT RED or MULTIPOINT BLUE.
  5. A grid of crosshairs will appear on the screen. If there is any red or blue fringe around any of them, press CURSOR RIGHT to enter NAVIGATE mode.
  6. Use CURSOR RIGHT, LEFT, UP, and DOWN to move to a crosshair that has a color outline.
  7. Press the 'EXIT' button to enter ADJUST mode.
  8. Use CURSOR RIGHT, LEFT, UP, and DOWN to merge the color with the crosshair.
  9. Press the 'STATUS/EXIT' button to return to NAVIGATE mode. Repeat as necessary.
  10. Press the 'MENU' button to return to the MANUAL CONVERGE menu.
  11. Press CURSOR DOWN until SAVE MULTIPOINT is selected.
  12. Press CURSOR RIGHT to save the multipoint settings.
  13. Press the 'EXIT' button to exit the menu.

No, if the Red doesnt adjust with the remote, You will need to replace both STK392-120 Convergence ICs. Its a fairly easy job if you have basic soldering skills, and you will also need about four 6.8 ohm 1 watt resistors for your model. You can get replacement ICs and resistors at the following link and they provide free instalation instructions with pictures. Heres the link.

Maganvox TV with red-shadow to picture

Hi Emily,

Your TV has bad convergence amplifiers. They are large integrated circuits that are mounted on large metal heat sinks. They have a part number on them, but might be covered up by a bracket. The part number should start with STK. They are replaced as pairs. You will have to find someone with the skills necessary to replace them.

Best Regards,

Blue Multipoint converge failure Philips 55PP9753

The most likely cause is shorted convergence chips and possibly a few pico fuses.

These sets need to have all three colors - RED - BLUE - GREEN - lined up correctly on the screen in order for the picture to look normal. This is called convergence.

When its out of alignment the video will look 3-D, wavy, distorted, etc. Most of the time you just need to adjust your convergence in the menu. If you cannot adjust it in the menu - then your convergence is broken and needs to be repaired. Convergence problems are very common on all Projection TV sets including Sony,Samsung,JVC,Philip Magnavox,Panasonic,Akai,Pioneer2_bing.gif Hitachi,Mitsubishi,Zenith and others.
You can get a convergenece repair kit with instructions from the links below.

Here are some of the most common problems with these sets...

Problem #1) Convergence

Yours may have one or more of the following symptoms...

*Screen Looks 3-D
*Colors wont align
*Screen may look distorted or warped
*No Audio/Video - TV Shuts down - May also make a constant chirping sound

Problem #2
Another common problem is dull or washed out video.

Your set may have one or more of the following symptoms....

*Dull looking picture
*White looking picture
*Halos around objects
*Red/Orange looking picture
