Problem for Washing Machines
Generic problem for all Washing Machines
Advice: Repair call now or later?
My Duet 9100 washer, about 5-6 years old, has started making some bad load noise. My best guess is drive mechanism, but I am not a mechanical engineer or mechanic. The noise doesn't always happen ... some cycles not at all, some cycles just a few times for a few seconds, and sometimes the machine gets "stuck" in the mode of making the bad sounds. We just restart it. The machine is about 7 minutes into the wash cycle when I first hear it.
I am hesitant to call for a repair, because the problem doesn't always happen. I suppose I could ask for a maintenance tune-up and that might fix the problem. Or I could wait for it to fail more consistently. What do you suggest?

- There are no error codes. The noise sounds like it is coming from the bottom part of the machine, not the tub. I would describe the noise as repetitive grinding or tapping. Nothing special occurs ... the cycle keeps running. Sometimes the cycle is at a point in which the tub is not moving, but the sounds continues. The sound always stops if I cancel the cycle. Often, the sound stops on its on after occurring for 2-5 seconds.
If there is more info I can provide, please let me know. Thanks !Oct 02, 2008
- Had a service call today. The service person removed 2 pennies, a button, and a paper clip from the water pump, and some small stones from the water pump filter. So you were right on about the pump. Thanks again for your advice.

Are there any error codes displayed on the front panel? Where does it sound like the noise is coming from? What does the noise sound like? What occurs when you hear the noise (i.e., tub stop spinning altogether, tub spin intermittent, does the tub fill, does the tub drain, etc.). I need a little more elaboration to give a judgement call here.

If the sound is coming from the bottom of the washer, that's your drain pump. If there is an obstruction the pump, you will experience slow drain issues and problems with the cycle starting properly and being able to spin out correctly. Normally, there is an "F02" error code associated with this problem, though. This may be just a symptom of some of your problems and NOT the cause. But...I would recommend you check the drain pump reservoir first to rule it out. The following link explains how:

The pump will shut off if you push the PAUSE/CANCEL button. The noise will also go away on its own during the wash cycle when it is not in use. It is normal for the pump to make some noise. That has been a common complaint about this washer. If the noise gets progressively worse AND you notice problems with drainage, I would recommend a replacement pump.
I do hope you find this information helpful. Let me know if you still require assistance.
