The only requirement for file sizes that large is that you format the drive using NTFS. FAT or FAT32 will not support files that large, so make sure you format NTFS :)

Hope this helps!

Mybook 500gb shows 2199gb and cannot be read

This drive has been misformatted. You will need to plug the drive into your windows computer. Hold down the windows key and tap the e key. In the window that appears, find the MyBook drive. Right click and choose format. Select the quick format box. Make sure file type is set to NTFS. Click "Format". This operation will however remove all data on the device.

My Book has same thing of "Drive is not

try to recover it from PC inspector File recovery - before formatting. Though, trying to format the disk will clear the data, and can be recovered by recovery tools only - try recovering it without formatting.

I can't transer file sizes more than 4 GB... What I've done to get around this is save my movies in multiple parts to make each file size smaller. Is there something I need to be able to transfer my files...

This will be a limitation of file size imposed by your operating system and drive format method. For drives formatted under FAT16 (2Gb) or FAT32 (4Gb - 2 bytes). FAT64 allows up to 16Zb while NTFS and NTFS5 both allow any size up to the actual volume capacity so with a 500Gb drive the max would be 500Gb for 1 file. I would therefore suggest that you retrieve all your stored data on the drive and reformat it with NTFS. Then you can have 1 continuous file instead of lots of 4Gb files.

WD 500 GB Passport Formatting error

you may have a FAT32/NTFS format problem between your wd500 and your pc. or differently formatted partitions. right click on their device letters on 'my computer' and look at 'properties'. should tell you how they're formatted and # of partitions, etc.
just a guess!
good luck!

I cannot copy files FROM my Western Digital 500GB

Hi,

Check the file system of your hard drive. If your PC is recognizing it, check if its a FAT or NTFS. If it is NTFS then you have to reformat it using your Mac and choose FAT. Mac OS recognizes NTFS as a read only drive. If you plan using it with your PC and MAC you should format it using your mac and choose MS-DOS in disc Utility. You cannot format the drive using your PC Computer with a FAT file system because of the capacity. Only Mac can format it with a FAT file system.

Cannot transfer files that are greater than 4GB

The lack of free space iis on your internal HD not the external. Whenever transferring files from one drive to another, you are acturally making a copy of the file to be transferred and sending the copy to the new drive. If your internal HD is nearly full, you can try to Cut and Paste the files to the external, or clear up more space on your internal b/4 tryiing to move the bigger files. Best of luck.

Cant download large files to my book

The controller board in Mybook might not support files over 4 gb. Check with the manufacturer if there are any new drivers for you product to solve your dilema. You could also just buy a cheap external case for the drive in the mybook and swap it out. None of the new cases have these limitations and you can get them online for less than 20 bucks. I like MAD Dog cases myself. I hope this helps you.

PROBLEMS WITH MY WD BOOK

Hi, This post might be of some help/idea... http://www.fixya.com/support/t191153-device_recognized The only difference is your model uses Western Digital and not Seagate. Yours can still be recognized but Windows consider it non-formatted. First try a data recovery software and another storage medium where you can copy the files if you're successful in the recovery. Good luck and kind regards.
