Yard Machines/Tiller I purchased the tiller online through a local Craigs list . com and I think I've tried everything to engage the tines but i'm not having any luck, because I did not recieve the owners manual either but it's got on the outside of the machine: chain drive counter rotating tines 18in. width 5.5 hp. Briggs & Stratton OHV and it's also a rear tine tiller. You can get back with me at : pghiii@peoplepc.com soon I hope.

myself and others have experienced this issue on the 18" MTD tillers, basically an primary gear which drive the tines from the same gearbox which dirves the wheels, has broken. the good news is, well, there isn't any good news. the bad news is that the gearbox itself is at the core of the machine, so everything else has to come off to get to it, and depending on the gear which has broken the replacement part could cost between $50 and $450 dollars, ha, yeah, who would pay that much for a gear, I guess it would be easier to just buy another til....OHHhhhh! They got me!!!!!!!!!

The tines are usually connected with shear bolts designed to break away when u hit something as a safety precaution so that u dont break anything in the transmission. its common that people dont know this and replace them with normal bolts. if this was done and the tines are not moving now chances are uve got a snapped gear shaft

The fork/shift lever is wore out, and they tend to bend from people slaming it, and getting to high on the tine position

Craftsman rear tine tiller

If you cant move the tines by hand then I wouldn't think you sheared the pins, more like a gear box problem.

I have a Yard Machine rear tine tiller that has sat unused for 4 years. I replaced the engine and while in goes forward and backward, when I engage the tines they won't rotate and the engine bogs

Transmission/differential.
Perhaps the unit sat for 4 years because the tines would not turn and your replacement engine has not solved the real problem.
I'd say disassemble the chain case to discover what's locking the tine drive.

The tines on a honda f220 always spin and don't change speed when clutch is engaged but speed up when throttle is increased. Adjusted cable with no luck.

I believe that unit utilizes a centrifical clutch. try decreasing the idle speed and see if the tines stop. They should then engage as throttle is increased.

We have a rototiller, craftsman, bought new at sears several years ago. Model No. 944627591, Craftsman 9 HP, 21 inch tine width, rear tine tiller with counter rotting tines. Pinion input gear is sheared...

The model ID starting in 944 indicates your tiller was manufactured by Husqvarna. This division has since been purchased by AYP. A quick online search finds that www.needlawnmowerparts.com lists having one for $55 plus shipping. I have not dealt with this company, so I can't recommend or not recommend them.
It is very common for tiller makers to not offer internal transmission parts. Transmissions are difficult at best to repair and reassemble. Used tillers are available from time to time, check your local classified ads or www.craigslist.com to find one. If you decide to go with a new tiller, i would recommend trying www.northerntools.com or www.mytsc.com to start your search.
As far as longevity on the new transmission, Sears won't guarantee any of their parts longer than 1 year. However, you should expect a replacement part to last as long as the first one did.
Sears doesn't give year models for their equipment, but usually supports replacement parts for at least 10 years. Most equipment manufacturers don't build their units to last longer than 10 years....they want you to buy another one.
I hopethis has helped.
Good luck!

The tiller won't stay in gear for the tines to turn. It jumps into forward without turning the tines.

Check the wire to make sure that when you engage the tines it is actually engaging the lever. This seems like your are either low on the fluid for the trans or it is stuck in place and will need some good lubrication and turned by hand. You can also with the engine off, engage the tines, and try to turn it by hand. if it turns by hand then the tarns is no good.

I have a MTD yard machine rear tine tiller. Goes forward and reverse but tines wont rotate. How do I fix?

You will have to get into the gearbox. It isn't too hard but is time consuming. Sounds like the drive for the tiller has broken. Could just be the chain in the gearbox for the tiller drive.

I had similar problem recently with 2007 Huskee MTD series 410. The shift assembly bent and couldn't move the clutch collar all the way over on the drive shaft.

Tiller tines will not turn. Engine runs fine...

Well hopefully it's not the transmission, as sometimes these tend to go. Another common but cheaper repair are the two bearings where the tines connect to the unit.

MORE THAN LIKELY.. The bearing is located above the worm gear housing, the part connected to the tines beneath the guard. This removal can be somewhat frustrating but if you remove it and remove the engine flange you'll be able to manually spin the drive shaft and see if it's the worm gear housing/lower bearings or if it's the more likely bearing on the clutch drum or the clutch itself.
