Question about Maxtor Hard Drive

Xp pro repair/reinstall problem

Something got messed up but I can't determine what.

Maxtor 160gb drive worked fine until last week, running XP Pro SP2 in 8gb partition C drive (I had been getting ready to increase partition size but needed to backup before that, oops, forgot to do that!). Installed new Acer 22" monitor and some of it's software and upon reboot received an error message that I can't recall or replicate but the only option was 3-finger salute and now no boot into Windows.

Tried to repair XP without success. Tried Seagate CD with diagnostics and ended up installing DDO but no boot.

Took 2nd harddrive from same system, Seagate 160gb, that had been the backup drive that I was refreshing for a new backup of both OS and Data but I don't have any other backup. Formatted that drive trying to do fresh install of XP Pro but after first section of install when it reboots, that drive also has DDO and if I'm not there it tries unsuccessfully to boot from the harddrive and hangs indefinitely. Restarting system and choosing boot from CD takes me back to start of install rather than resuming. What am I missing?

I have another system with XP Home, a laptop with XP Pro, and 3 systems with Linux. I haven't tried hooking up the Maxtor as a slave as yet to a working system but may do so shortly. Any suggestions? Acronis Disk Director 10? Thanks in advance. Roached

Thanks, but that didn't solve the problem but of course it's always a good suggestion. I think my motherboard controller being 8-9 years old may not be cooperating as I bought a new WD 320GB drive and had no luck trying a fresh install of XP.

Interestingly, I used a different computer to format the old drive attached as a slave, changed it to a master, installed and configured PCLOS 2007 leaving plenty of room to install other OS for multi-boot. I'll let you know if moving it to the old box will show any recognition glitches. PCLOS is very friendly and the ONLY reason I need XP is some CAD software that needs it to function, too bad there isn't a Linux port!

Access to hard drive

If your Windows install DVD tells you that it cannot access the drive, then most likely it is kaput, Windows, is real pedantic, regarding drive quality, If it says it is "Faulty" there's a real good chance it is. If you cannot "Format" the drive at all, then sorry but it is time for a new one.

Have 250Gb hard drive. Shows only 127Gb available. Used fdisk to remove and replace partition and reformat drive. No help. Drive is quiet running.

Since you have already posted you are running win xp.
for more info the drive limitations prior to win xp home/pro sp2 is 127 gb.
You can use a seperate partition program for full access to the drive with it being partitioned.
The only way around it is to have win xp home or pro with sp2 already included on the cd.

My back up 160GB Rugged drive quit working, felt hotter than normal and gives off a 'burnt' cct. smell. MacBook Pro using XP pro SP3 with Firewire link. Backup size about 70GB with five years of photos....

One of the circuits in the back up drive failed. Your options are to send to to the manufacturer for possible repair or you can try removing the drive unit, that is actually what is inside that, and putting it in a portable case, available from Best Buy for about 39.99, and continue to use the device. or take it as a lose of data and get a new back up drive.

Mecer wont load wi xp sp2 on 160gig hardrive

The BIOS is seeing the drive but your computer can only see about 120-130 GB of harddrive. If the drive has a pin option to limit it's size you may be able to limit it then install windows but if it doesn't you're back to looking for a smaller drive.

Hope this helps

Bios won't reconise 160 gig maxtor harddrive

You could try a BIOS update to increase the size of the Drive the BIOS is able to see.

The second last one indicates that drive sizes are supported over 65GB. It may still not be able to see the 160GB HDD, but this is your only option with this Board. You could always upgrade the Motherboard to support larger drives.

Good Luck.
