Dell 2400 desktop

I turn on computer power light is on harddrive light flickers a couple times monitor does not come on and nothing else have no clue where to start troubleshooting the problem

    hi i did what you told me when i remove the video card computer screen comes on the screen says object name not found isass.exe and it wants the xp disc the computer is in a setup mode and wont load windows is that from removing the video card or is it another problem

Thanks joe well i tried the repair and i got the same result i got a new xp disk reinstalled xp now i got windows to work 1 battle is down now i think i need to reinstall the rest of the disc that came with the computer .now its just really slow its also asking me to go on-line to unlock windows xp with a 30 day countdown clock it didn't ask for a cd key # i did a format and reinstall its the only way i could get this to work its also stuck in low resolution i am very determined to fix this dam computer thanks allot all the info im getting is really helping

First, check your monitor, Is the power light on and amber?
If not , monitor is dead.

If monitor light is amber, Check the power supply fans and cpu fan. See if they are operating ok.

If monitor is coming on, fans are working, I would Pull out the adapter boards that are installed, then power on the unit. If the unit displays video, then reinstall adapters back in one at a time.
Make sure you power down when ever you remove/install anything in the PC.

    isass.exe is part of XP. I would boot the XP cd and do a repair.

    When the XP cd boots and gets to the screen that ask if you want to Install or repair, select Install.

    On the next page you will get the option to Install or repair, select this repair option this time.

    let it go through the repair, it will ask you to put in your Win XP key. (license sticker should be on your computer).

Does the monitor go out completely, no power? Or just lose a signal? Check ALL cables, AC and Monitor cables. Could be a Graphics adapter issue or Monitor , try another monitor.Your computer has a few miles on it , right? You could buy a PCI Graphics card if the monitor is OK.

Monitor power light on but nothing else

Disconnect the video cable from the computer and power on the monitor. If you see the color bars floating on the display then the monitor is functioning. Your computer has a problem.

My dell dimension has all green lights but the d is orange

I'm going to change up my usual method of providing a solution for a Dell
product, and finding information on their support website.

Navigation around Dell's Support website leaves a lot to be desired.

Start with,

A) Type - Dell Support in your browser search bar, and left-click on the
search icon

B) This is where it will take you,

C) Now left-click on - Start Here, in the green button, under the heading -
Support for Home Users

D) Under the - Support Options heading on the left side, go down the list,
and left-click on - Manuals

E) Give it a couple of seconds, and the - Get Manuals for Dell Products,
window will come up.

F) Under the middle heading - Choose a Model, left-click on - Select Model
in the green button

G) Now click on - Desktops

H) Click on - Dimension

I) Scroll the list down, click on 2400, then go down, and click on - Confirm

J) Click on - English

K) Under the blue HTML Documents heading, left-click on View, to the right of
Service Manual

You are now here,

In the list left-click on Advanced Troubleshooting

Look at the chart under the heading - Diagnostic Lights

"Another failure has occurred"

Going down the chart you see the possible failures that can occur.
Indication is to "Ensure that the cables are properly connected to the
system board, (Motherboard), from the Harddrive, CD drive, and DVD drive."


Are you aware of how to do this?
How to open your computer case, alleviate Static electricity from your body
BEFORE, you reach inside your UNPLUGGED from power computer, and
also know what cables they are referring to?

Go back to the main menu.
Left-click on Removing and Reinstalling Parts
Left-click on - Drives

Adding or Replacing a CD or DVD drive, shows you where the drive/s are
Replacing a Harddrive, shows you where the Harddrive is located.

The Harddrive, and the optical drives, (CD/DVD) are IDE.
Also known as PATA.

They use this type of interface data cable,

Must be plugged in tightly, and in the correct orientation.

They use this type of power cable, (standard 4-pin Peripheral power cable)

This power cable must be plugged in tightly to those peripherals also.
(Harddrive's, and optical drives are Peripheral components)

Anti-Static Precautions:

Your body carries Static electricity.
Static can fry out (Short Circuit), the delicate hardware components inside
a computer.

Computer Unplugged from power, computer case open, working on a table,
TOUCH the metal frame of the open computer case, to relieve your body of

If you leave your computer in the middle of working on it, upon your return
Touch the metal frame again.

See if the cables above are connected tightly. If there is ANY doubt, it doesn't
hurt to unplug them, and reconnect them.
After you have done so, plug the computer back into power, WAIT 1 minute,
turn the computer on.

Suggestion is to leave the computer case open at this time, and Do Not reach
inside. You are testing. If there is a chance that children may access your
computer before you are done testing, then close the computer case.

My suggestion to leave the computer case open, is that you may have to go
back inside, if the above does not cure your problem.

When i turn my computer on the power light and


If your computer turns on and your monitor stays in stand by mode, then there is no communication between your video card and the monitor.
You could check if the cable is plugged in correctly or even faulty.

It is also possible that there is a problem with your video card. Maybe physically uninstalling and reinstalling it could solve it.

If none of this helps, then you might want to check a new video card.

One reason that this is happening could be that it is on Power saving mode. This happens when the LCD monitor detecs an incorrect timing then thats the time that the LCD goes blank and the power botton starts to blink.

what you need to do is to turn the computer off. Unplug cables attach to the LCD make sure it is also off, once done press the power botton for a couple of 30secs to a minute and then release. After doing so re-connect all the cables and make sure that both ends is tight and secure once everything is ok turn the computer on same with the monitor to check if it solves the problem.

Monitor displays slowly after the computer starts.

try to turn off you screen saver just turn off power monitor to see monitor easy wake up after long time.if ok means windows screen saver have problem if still same look like is you monitor something wrong need to check

Your problem is one of two things:

  1. Power supply inside the computer has died
  2. The motherboard has bad capacitors.
I would get your local neighborhood geek to have a look, or drop the PC off at the local computer store for diagnosis and repair estimate. If it's only the power supply, those run about $25. If it's the motherboard, those run up to $150, and for a PC that old---I'd replace the entire unit rather that put that kind of repair money into something that actually has reached the end of its useful life.
