The start relay on Kenmore model 596.58642890 replacement question

The original relay switch has 3 terminal contacts on the compressor side. On the wiring side it has 4 contacts... 2 are start capacitor connections and two at the bottom of the relay are the A/C 110-125 volt line in connections. The replacement part you bought is a genericreplacement for the ref. The correct substitute part is W10189190 . The two wires for the original relay in the top horizonal position evenly spaced apart... ignore the 2 wires. They are wires to the old start capacitor mounted somewhere near the compressor. The other two wires are important to configure them properly. One may be blue and the other red. Here is a cheap way to know which is the right configuration... Use a volt ohmmeter and check the continuity from the refrigerator ground terminal on the A/C line cord or chassis to both A/C line in wire connections to the relay. If the ohms are zero or very near to zero then that is the ground/ aka neutral wire. The neutral wire connects to the bi-metal overload protector built into the relay. That is the bottom center connection terminal on the compressor. The other A/C line in wire is the hot wire and it connects to the Start/ Run connection on the new relay.

Fridge makes clicking sound every 60-90 seconds..freezer defrosting, fridge not staying cold.

If the clicking sound you are hearing is from the back of the refrigerator near the floor then I believe the sound is coming from the start relay that is located on the side of the compressor.
Replace the start relay with a new one and you should be good to go unless the compressor has been damaged.
The start relay is easy to replace as it just plugs into the side of the compressor. Start relays are also often very inexpensive.
Make sure to use your model number and get the factory direct replacement start relay and not a 3n1 universal start relay.

Our whirlpool fridge/freezer has stopped working today for no obvious reason. There is still power being supplied to the unit, as the light is still turning on once the door is opened, but it is no longer...

You will need to check the following parts:

  1. Compressor start relay
  2. Cold control thermostat
  3. Compressor
Compressor start relay
  1. With the fridge unplugged, and an Ohm-Meter in hand, remove the Compressor start relay after marking where each wire goes. The wires must be removed before testing the start relay.
  2. Use your ohm meter to test the white(overload) wire, with one meter probe on the terminal where the White wire went, and the other meter probe on the other terminals, 1 at a time, should read 0-1 ohm.
  3. For the brown relay, just put both meter probes in each hole, should read 0-1 ohm.
Cold control thermostat
  1. Put the Compressor start relay back in place and hook the wires back up to it.
  2. Find the cold control thermostat, it is the Switch with a knob that controls the Temperature. Tap under the console and on the knob in your refrigerator section and see if it comes on.
  3. If the contacts inside that cold control thermostat go bad, then when you tap the console or knob the refrigerator comes back on again.

The fan is running, the fridge trys to start the compressor frequent, but it stops in one minute.

That sounds like short cycling and could be defective compressor start relay, overload and Capacitor need to be replaced. The longer it tries to start the hotter the compressor gets so I believe until these parts=> 67005560 Start Relay With Overload and Run Capacitor 65889-4 are checked or replaced you need to unplug. It also could be your compressor is not in good shape. If you would like to test your compressor follow these instructions here=> Whirlpool Products The location for these parts are here=> Maytag MFD2560HES and in photos part 10 and 11. I will assist you in any way if needed, Thanks, Sea Breeze
Make sure both fans run at all times compressor runs because fans do not always stop when they go bad. They run when they want to.

The fan seems to be running, but the compressor is not. Refiigerator is warm.

I just had a similiar problem, but I could hear a buzz and click noise each time the compressor tried to start. It was either the compressor siezed up ($700+ repair job) or the start capacitor/relay going bad. Since it was the cheapest place to start, I spent $32 buying a new relay/overload/start capacitor assembly at a local refrigeration parts store. Installed it in just a few minutes and the fridge fired right up. Sweet.....maytag no longer makes the part, but whirlpool offers a substitute..part number WPL-67005560 Good Luck.

How do I wire the RCO410 into my maytag fridge? I am having difficulty correctly wiring the RCO410.

look at the wiring on the relay, then if you have a techumseh compresser the top terminal is common with black wire going to it, the one on the bottom left is start with the white wire going to it, and the one on the bottom right is the run with the red wire goiung to it.

first take all the relays and capacitor off of compressor , then attach black wire with terminal on "C" terminal post usually top terminal, white wire with terminal goes on "S" terminal post on compressor, red wire with terminal goes on "R" terminal post on compressor. then take the two black wires one connects to white neutral wire and the other connects to the black power wire if tis fridge has a condensor fan then you will also need to connect it two the two black wires also thanks hope this helps

My fridge stoped cooling

Sounds like you are describing a capacitor. And the relay that is attached to the compressor is called a PTC relay.
