Question about SmartDisk Crossfire Desktop (xf160f) 160 GB Hard Drive

My Mac won't recognise my Crossfire 160GB

Hi
My Crossfire smartdisk 160GB worked perfectly until suddenly my Mac didn't recognise it anymore. I have tried plugging it in to my Mac using both types of connection (USB and firewire) - but it doesn't make any difference; my Mac can't find it.
Also, the green 'on' light is a bit temperamental even though the power pack is plugged in. But even when the light is on for long periods my Mac still can't recognise it.
I have all my music stored on it...
Any ideas? Would be brilliant if you could help me out.
Many thanks

I had this same problem. One option is to open the smartdisk up. It should have a seagate ata drive inside. Attach it to a computer as a slave drive. Your dive will appear as a secondary drive on your computer. you should be able to get all your files off the drive. If your worried about voiding your computers warranty you can buy a usb adapter to make the drive act as an external drive. I highly recommend never using this drive again. I used it as my main hard drive and it fried on me. If you plan on getting rid of this drive let me. I need the circuit board to get my music files and portfolio off my failed drive. Thank you.

congratulations on switching to mac!plug the external hard drive back into the PC, and copy the photo's to the PC, now plug it into your mac and go to applications-utilities-disc utility, the external drive should be listed on the left, click on the erase tab, at the volume format select "ms-dos file system", then click the erase button, this will erase everything on the drive and set it up so your mac can use it (but its ok because you moved all your pictures to the PC) now you can go back to the PC and copy the pictures on the external drive and it will work with your mac.

I've had my Crossfire 160 for a year or so. It's

New sounds coming from a harddrive is a very bad sign. I couldn't determine if the Crossfire has a little fan in the enclosure to help keep it cool; if so maybe you are lucky and only the fan is making noise.

If there is nothing in that case other than a harddrive that has just begun this new behavior of clicking, then it is time to back it up and not trust it anymore. One day it will stop working altogether, or worse start causing data loss randomly and intermittently.

I would keep using it, but stop trusting it.

Ex.hard drive

If the hard drive isn't detected at all by your computer then it may be defective. If you can test it on Linux or Mac and see if those detect it, may just be a driver issue in Windows. You can also try going to Disk Management in Windows and seeing if its there and manually assigning a letter or if that doesn't work you can try a hard drive data recovery program from http://www.stellarinfo.com/download.htm. Hope it helps!

Crossfire 160gb external hard drive.

If the drive was formatted in a newer windows OS and it is the NTFS file system, the Mac OS will only have read access. You can check this by plugging it in and checking the properties. To solve this you can copy your stuff off and reformat in the FAT32 format, you will only lose the security features that NTFS offers.

Hi, A few questions first.
Have you recently changed any hardware in your PC?
Have you recently had any power outs or surges?
Have you at all changed any settings in your system setup?
What type of hard drive is it?
What operating system are you using?

Please let me know
