Does the power light still work when you have the above problem? If so check the site www.tvrepairkits.com. They should have a repair kit for this model.

If you have any of the following problems you may want to check the site www.tvrepairkits.com for a repair kit. Most of the issue below are fairly common with the older Magnavox projection sets.
Symptom: Screen shrinks and expands - may or may not correct itself after the TV warms up. After a few days, weeks, or months of having the shrinking/expanding problem you may loose all audio/video but the power light will remain lit!

(Note: The below symptoms typicaly occurs after having the expanding/shrinking screen problem above)

Symptom: No Audio or Video but power light is on

Symptom: Audio works but no Video. Power light still work

Symptom: No Video. Audio is intermittent. Power light still works

First check the output of your power supply. I've suspect that you haven't enough supply or unregulated one which sense by the processor and then it will automatically shuts off the unit. Check for open fusible resistor, leaky capacitor, shorted volt regulator ic on the the power supply.
If you haven't an experience to isolate the problem then I've advice you to look for a qualified tech to do the job.

Brightness of tv is slowly deminshing and getting darker. When I turn it on it either takes a few minutes for picture to display(has sound as soon as turned on) or it shuts down before picture comes on.

You are not the only one I can tell you that. I had a similar problem with my Phillips 42 in. LCD HD TV.

Here's the problem. The Power Supply Board. I opened my TV up(warranty was up of course) and found several bad capacitors. Phillips and several other companies were sold capacitors that although were highly rated failed within 5 years because of a lack of preservatives. All sorts of electronic equipment is now being effected due to these defective capacitors.
Solutions?
1. Take it in and have it fixed
2. Open it up, check the board for faulty capacitors(bulged or leaking) Buy a new Power supply board and install it.
3. Remove PSB, remove faulty capacitors and replace with compatible new ones.

Hope this helps

Heard a pop, tv went off, then doesnt come back on

Your unit has some sort of PSU fault, or a problem that is shutting down the Power Supply Unit, PSU. This happens so that no further damage, and possible fire will occur. The sound is it starting up, shutting down, over and over.

You need to take the unit to a reputable service centre/man and ask for a firm "Quote" for the work to be done.

Power comes on, but nothing appears on the screen, the power button flashes on and off but no picture or sound after about 15 or 10 seconds shuts itself completely off.

Hi,
According to the symptom the problem is in power supply unit, Some of the components in power supply being short. If you have proper tools(volt meter, soldering iron etc.) to check it then let me know for further support, or call any expert nearby to fix the problem because its a bit technical job and can perform by an expert to find the faulty component.
Thanks for using fixya.

Error Code 5 flashes when unit shuts down

Good Day;
It sounds like the TV may have a shorted CRT, picture tube, but let's trouble shoot:
1. Unplug TV from wall.
2. Remove speaker grill, two on bottom, the screws are covered with plastic caps, right and left side on bottom next to floor.
3. Remove inner panel.
4. The blue tube is the one the right side, remove socket, with phillips driver, make sure it's not touching anything.
5. Plug and turn TV back on, if picture appears with no blue it's the tube.
6. If still shuts down, bad blue CRT driver IC.
CAUTION: Call a factory authorized service dealer to give you an estimate, if this sounds too hard.
Good Luck, Day, Big Irish.
