Assuming the laptop is running XP -
Open Control Panel
Open Network Connections
Right click on the network adapter and select Properties
Click on TCP/IP and then Properties
You can change the IP address here but it will probably work best if you have it obtain an IP address automatically.

Laptop cant find router to set or change password

You will need to connect directly to the router with a Ethernet cable to configure the wireless portion of the router. Once you have done that, then you should be able to do the configuration in the future using the wireless. If you do not have the manual, you can download it from the Linksys website.

Thanks, Jim

I got a wireless router for a new laptop its hooked up but wont let me get online with laptop

check for the default ip setting of wireless router. If it is 192.168.1.1 then you need to change it to 192.168.0.1

to check the ipaddress of the router connect it with wire to laptop. at command prompt type ip config. look for gateway setting.. it will be 192.168.1.1

now go to internet explorer and type the gateway address 192.168.1.1

it will ask you for user name and password

enter admin as username and admin as password
now look for router ip address and change it to 192.168.0.1. save setting and restart the router....do reply back if it works

Need to change IP address for Actiontec router for verizon fios

definately you will need to change the IP address.
But you can also change the IP address of the wireless extender.
so instead of changing the IP address of the router, you can change the IP address of the extender.
For that you will need to connect the computer to the Extender.
assign a static IP to the computer 192.168.0.10 and Default gateway 192.168.0.30. that will open the set up page of the extender.
change the IP addres of the extender to 192.168.1.30.
that will help you.

2 Pc's with same IP

AT either desktop or laptop:

[Start]
[Run]
[cmd]
A dark "DOS" windows will appear
At the prompt, type: ipconfig
press [ENTER]
Note the "IP Address" (probably 192.168.1.2)
type: ipconfig /renew
press [ENTER]
Note the IP Address
If it has changed, then you are ok. Type: exit and press [ENTER]
If it did not change, then try this on the other computer.

If that didn't change either, the go to the Control Panel
[Network Settings]
Find the wireless or wired network adapter and Right-Click
Choose "Prpoerties"
In the Properties window, double-click "IP Address"
See the IP Address assigned? change the last digit by one number.
Example: if the IP Address is 192.168.1.2 then change to 192.168.1.3

[OK] [OK][OK]

It should work now...

Laptops do not recieve IP address from the router

Carlos

I think the problem lies within the dhcp of your router. Make sure dhcp is on and change the lease time to 1440 minutes or higher that way once you have the ip address it will stay with your laptop longer. alternatively allocate the ip address on your laptop manually.

good luck

Setting up a wireless router

first you have to check the ip address of the dsl modem you used and see to it that it is not the same ip address of the router to avoid conflict. the default ip address of dlink router is 192.168.0.1.if in case your dsl modem has the same ip address with the router, you have to change firs the ip address of the router before connecting the router to your dsl modem.
next you need to know your internet connection whether it is DYNAMIC or PPPOE, depending on how your internet provider configured your modem. for PPPOE connection, you have to know the USERNAME and PASSWORD that your provider provides you.
good luck.
