Question about Televison & Video

6 Answers

I have a Toshiba 36" screen of the older variety with a deep back. I know nothing about TV's. When I turn it on the audio is fine but the screen only shows about 20% of the picture in the center of the screen but it looks like the projection is from the top of the full picture. I would like to know if this can be fixed or do I now need a new TV?

    If I have a friend who can work on TVs what will I need in the way of repairs to get the TV to work normally.

  • hgilberg Sep 28, 2008

    The answer was not to my problem. It concerned a 50" tv without sound. Please refer back to my 36" Toshiba.

  • hgilberg Sep 28, 2008

    The answer I received did not apply to my 36" Toshiba TV. Please review my original question and give me an answer.

Hi,

As welcomejee has earlier posted, the exact model number is required to be able to give you specific repair advice. Anything else is generic and therefore might or might not be addressing your concern. Some of which are:

  • low main B+;
  • defective filter capacitor in the power supply;
  • low FBT/HOT B+;
  • vertical.
I am tempted to think that you have a CRT conventional TV rather than a PTV. The model number of course would confirm this.

Hope this be of initial help/idea. Pls post back how things turned up or should you need additional information.

Good luck and kind regards. Thank you for using FixYa.

Regarding your problem: "When I turn it on the audio is fine but the screen only shows about 20% of the picture in the center of the screen"

when this happens on a rear projection TV, the problem regards the light tunnel, probably the mirrors on the light tunnel had moved, or one of them is out of place, and the light beam projected generates picture on part of the screen only.

This is easy repair for any TV repairman that can work on DLPs, he will just need to take apart the back of the TV and inspect the light tunnel.

Well, to repair this tv you need to mention correct model number to get proper service manual, contains all necessary technical information inside.
looking in service manual is like map of city, where to go.
you also need to have screwdrivers, tools, soldering iron or soldering station, volt meter like that.

The convergence feature is used to align the picture tubes inside the television so the image is projected on the screen evenly without ghosting.

YOU NEED TO HAVE CHECK ON THIS AREA.

I have an older 50" projector tv and it has no sound and will not except a remote. The problem is the pc boards are burnt, I have a picture nothing else. In the back on the bottom is an access panel that can be removed to access the pc boards. MAKE SURE THE TV IS UNPLUGGED!!! To clean the boards use a contact or pc board cleaner. This comes in an aersal can and you can spray the boards literaly saturating them. If this doesn't work one or more boards are burnt but repairable.

No your tv is perfect and it can be definately fixed but as u said you dont have technical knowledge about tv. just take it to the repair center as its the problem of your convergence ---ics--- and allignment problem on the main board.
it will not cost u more then $200 plus service charge of the technician to get it repaired

One of the most recognizable makers of TVs in the world is Toshiba. The company's TVs are found in every major electronics store at a reasonable price. Packed with features, they have a model for everyone, whether it be LCD or older, tube-based CRT technology. Toshiba T.v are fairly easy to operate. Basic functions
  • Before you do anything with your Toshiba TV, you have to plug it in to a wall outlet. After plugging it in, locate the power button on the front (or on the remote) and turn on your TV. Depending on if you have cable TV or not, you can use the channel functions to flip between your favorite channels. The "Menu" button is useful to access advanced settings, like channel detection, parental controls, closed captions and picture controls.
  • Using video inputs
  • You can connect a variety of devices to your Toshiba TV via its front, side or rear inputs. If you look at the back, you'll see a variety of audio and video inputs to connect virtually any kind of device. You should see a few kinds of video inputs: Composite and s-video (for connecting older technology like VCRs and cable boxes), component video (for connecting older DVD players) and HDMI (for connecting digital technology like receivers and Blu-Ray players). Audio inputs are analog (red and white) or digital (coaxial and optical). Use digital connections when possible to ensure the best quality.

    To connect VCRs and DVD players, simply connect the proper cable to their audio and video outputs, then match the cable to the proper inputs on the back of the TV. Make sure everything is secure and take note of which input you connected it to. Now, tune your TV to the proper input by pressing "Video" on the remote.
  • Maintenence and tips
  • Your Toshiba TV is a sensitive electronic device, so precautions should be taken to keep it in top working order. If the screen gets dusty, wipe it with a dry, soft cloth. If you own a Toshiba plasma TV, be aware of burn-in and ghosting problems. Avoid watching programs that have static images is left on the TV for hours at a time. If you have a flat-panel Toshiba TV, consider getting it professionally calibrated to get the best possible picture

    No picture.Just a single line in middle of screen.

    No, your picture tube is fine. This is a problem in the vertical circuit that deflects the beam up and down. This repair is fairly typical across most television brands and should not cost too much to fix. I don't want to quote another shops pricing but from us this would run about $150.00 to fix.
