Question about Computers & Internet

1 Answer

I have had a wireless router for over a year and it was working fine. Now I can't get my laptop to connect? I'm not sure everything is plugged in properly. The digital phone that is hooked up has recently been swapped with another phone.

When the router was removed, did you restart the cable modem (power cycle it) with the computer plugged in. This will refresh the IP address on the modem and probably fix the issue.

Reboot the computer.

Change out the ethernet cable between the computer and modem, they can go bad unexpectedly.

You also might check device manager to see if the ethernet port has any issues.

Finally, just because I have seen it happen, make sure you are using an ethernet (larger plug) and not a phone line (small plug) to connect.

If none of this helps, please add your operating system (windows 7, vista, xp, ect), so I can tell you were to look for other issues.

This is only a problem with the firmware of your modem/router that you need to update it, because a network device like a modem and router that is working fine for severla years and suddenly stop working you just need to update the firmware of it and it should be working fine again, to update the firmware of the modem/router just need to call the manufacturer for that....

Hope that helps.........

We have BT broadband. When we occasionally have to reset the router, everything except the 2 Dell Dimension 5150 desktops works via wireless. They refuse to reconnect. All the other Desktops / laptops work...

Not sure exactly what your hardware setup is, but I would reboot the broadband router, then reboot the wireless router. Everything should come up clean, but give it at least 5 min. To help connect after reboots, you can choose "repair" from the wireless icon in the system tray (XP?) or renew your IP address. Start --> Run... and type ipconfig /renew

Hope this helps!

Did you try to install the drives first? try that. see if the laptop gets an IP from the router (by default 192.168.x.x).

I would also try to plug the laptop directly to the router and see if it works (with network cable plugged between the two)

How to connect wireless router, Netgear WGR614, to my computer?

4 steps to set up your home wireless network
1.
Choose your wireless equipment
The first step is to make sure that you have the equipment you need. As you're looking for products in stores or on the Internet, you might notice that you can choose equipment that supports three different wireless networking technologies: 802.11a, 802.11b, and 802.11g. We recommend 802.11g, because it offers excellent performance and is compatible with almost everything.
Shopping list
• Broadband Internet connection
• Wireless router
• A computer with built-in wireless networking support or a wireless network adapter

A wireless router
The router converts the signals coming across your Internet connection into a wireless broadcast, sort of like a cordless phone base station. Be sure to get a wireless router, and not a wireless access point.
A wireless network adapter
Network adapters wirelessly connect your computer to your wireless router. If you have a newer computer you may already have wireless capabilities built in. If this is the case, then you will not need a wireless network adapter. If you need to purchase an adapter for a desktop computer, buy a USB wireless network adapter. If you have a laptop, buy a PC card-based network adapter. Make sure that you have one adapter for every computer on your network.
Note: To make setup easy, choose a network adapter made by the same vendor that made your wireless router. For example, if you find a good price on a Linksys router, choose a Linksys network adapter to go with it. To make shopping even easier, buy a bundle, such as those available from D-Link, Netgear, Linksys, Microsoft, and Buffalo. If you have a desktop computer, make sure that you have an available USB port to plug the wireless network adapter into. If you don't have any open USB ports, buy a hub to add additional ports.
2.
Connect your wireless router
Since you'll be temporarily disconnected from the Internet, print these instructions before you go any further.
First, locate your cable modem or DSL modem and unplug it to turn it off.
Next, connect your wireless router to your modem. Your modem should stay connected directly to the Internet. Later, after you've hooked everything up, your computer will wirelessly connect to your router, and the router will send communications through your modem to the Internet.

Hi Ive connected my linksys wrt 54g working fine on main puter but can't connect on my laptop .It's showing strong reception but then says cannot connect,Thanks,Guy

Check in the router settings, in your internet browser from your deskyop, type 192.168.1.1 and enter the router config screen by using a blank username, and admin for a password. Look through the settings and make sure it is set to wireless signal on. Also, look to make sure your laptop isn't made specifically for Wireless N technology. Some wireless adapters aren't backwards compatable.
