Very slow transfer to Kingston 8GB datatraveler

When transfering to pen drive it goes very slow, about 800Kb/s.
Transfering from goes at "normal" speed, 15Mb/s.
"windows cannot complete format" when using complete format, but when using "quick format" it works.
Sometimes vista finds a problem with the pen drive, then fix it, but transfer still slow.

I am using windows vista

RAM is not a problem, and my computer is running effectively

  • trondrs Sep 30, 2008

I`ve had this problem before, I then formated the computer which fixed the problem. Don`t want to format the computer again. Pendrive is formated to fat32.

New problem; when transferring i get an error message saying that it can`t find the source file

I have 4GB RAM on a brand new computer, not running many or big programs.

  • zolika Aug 24, 2013

It is neither a computer nor OS problem. I tested it on 6 computers (XP/7 64 and 32 bit, Ubuntu). Write speed results: 7-12 MB/s (one PC 4MB/s only). Read speed results: 40-60 MB/s

Because the Problem was fixed when you re-formatted the computer last time. Maybe it has something to do with memory and speed of your computer and when you reformat, this is being restored back to normal so maybe try increasing your RAM.

This means you have a USB 2.0 device plugged into a 1.1 interface. As a result it'll perform slower than it could. To turn off this feature:

  1. Right click My Computer and select Manage.
  2. Go to Device Manager.
  3. Expand the Universal Serial Bus controllers icon.
  4. Select the Properties of any USB Universal Host Controller.
  5. Select the Advanced tab.
  6. Check the box: "Don't tell me about USB errors."

Also try formatting the pendrive with FAt32 file system. Its faster and more reliable

Make sure that you don't have an anti virus program scanning your pen drive. That will slow it down.

HI,

- Check if your PC is running at its maximum efficiency
- Close all side processes that are not of any use to you. This can be done by pressing :Ctrl+Shift+Esc and then going to processes. In there only close the processes that are under your user name and are of no use. NOTE: DON'T CLOSE "EXPLORER.EXE". This will free a sizeable amount of your RAM, making your PC generally faster.
- While copying anything, avoid multi-tasking as that will simply slow down your PC, causing a delay in the copying.
IF NONE OF THIS WORKS, then create a back-up of all the software in your Pen-Drive and then format it.
This should just about do it.
If still the problem persists, go to your dealer- your pen-drive must be in its warranty period.

8GB Kingston Data Traveller only has 101mb available!

Hi Cristina,
This is Azeem Inam. your data traveller does not accept data over 101MBs. There can be two reasons for this problem. 1. there may be a virus that has provided a limitation on the copying facility. 2. This can be a partition problem. All you need to do is to use the software called DM (Disk manager). This is a DOS versioned software. Go into its advance installation option and then accept the hard disk kingston data traveller. It will take you to another menu showing the partition styles you may choose. you'll have to choose FAT32 type. then in the next menu you'll have to choose partition size by pressing enter button. and then accepting format you are done. it will start working as new again. Thanks for consulting your problem.

Pen Drive 16GB not working on laptop but working on other PCs...

It sounds as though the problem is with your notebook, rather than the flash drive. Specifically, with the USB port you are plugging it into. If you have another USB on the notebook, try switching between the two, and see if it behaves any differently. Another thing that can cause a problem is if the USB port on your notebook is not USB 2.0. The older ports (as in, an older computer) didn't have nearly the transfer speeds of the newer standard.

Also, are you trying to run multiple USB devices on your notebook at once? That could cause problems as well.

Cheers
Nick
