Getting to answer phone before fax or message bank cuts in
My pixma mp830 will only ring once before the fax machine cuts in. I have tried everything, i think, in the manual to allow the phone to ring 6 or 7 times before either, the fax or message bank cuts in. Can someone please help me. I am happy with every other aspect that the machine can do, but it is frustrating that this problem occurs. Thankyou in anticipation

Re: getting to answer phone before fax or message bank...
To stop the pixma from picking up even after the phone line has been picked up you need to ensure the telephone line is connected to the LINE port and not to the PHONE port on the back... the PHONE socket is if you wish to connect a phone line to the same socket Thru the pixma. (passthrough)
not sure how to stop the pixma picking up on the first ring though..... are you sure that you are SAVING the setting change.....?
a 6ya expert can help you resolve that issue over the phone in a minute or two.

Have you set the Fax to Auto-answer or is it waiting for you to manually answer the fax? Change this by pressing Setup and Press 3, Press 3 again. Press the right arrow to toggle On or Off.
Make sure that the rings to answer is set appropriately. Press Setup 3 4 to change. If you have a PBX or ISDN converter phone system, check that you are using the correct phone jack - for phones and faxes.
Do you have a voicemail service on the line? This will force you to receive faxes manually and only when you are present.
If you have an answering machine connected to the line, check that the answering machine is not the problem by disconnecting it and trying to receive a fax. Long welcome messages can make the calling fax machine hang up early. Insufficient time between the end of the message and the beep can make it impossible for the OfficeJet to spot the fax tones; the same is true with loud messages. If this is the problem, record your message again, keeping it short (10 seconds but speak softly and slowly).
If you have a distinctive ring on the fax line, make sure that the OfficeJet is programmed to recognize the ring (some ring patterns cannot be interpreted and you'll need to contact your phone company to change it).
Check that other computer hardware is not causing an issue (modem with auto-answer, other interference). Unplug everything except the OfficeJet and try to receive a fax to check for interference. Then reconnect one item at a time and try getting a fax again to determine which item is causing the probelm.
The message machine needs to be set to answer 1 ring before the fax is set to answer. When the phone rings the fax starts listening even when the answer machine picks up. If the fax hears fax tones it will receive the fax and if no tones the answer machine will take a message.
Is your phone line plugged into the proper receptical on the fax? It should be plugged into the LINE slot, not the PHONE slot. The PHONE SLOT IS TO CONNECT A TELEPHONE TO THE FAX. IT IS NOT FOR THE INCOMING PHONE LINE. If your phone connection is correct, try calling your fax machine from a cell phone while you are at the fax machine. Listen on the cell to see if the fax machine picks up the line. If it does not, go into your fax machine's settings, either INITIAL SETUP FAX SETUP, or PHONE SETTINGS. You may have to try several settings to find one that works, depending on your fax machine. Try going to RECEIVE SETUP on your fax machines setup menu. Scroll through the settings, writing each down on paper. Try RING DELAY, RING TIME, NUMBER OF RINGS TO ANSWER , or any other settings relating to how your fax answers the phone line. Try changing each setting, one at a time, and try calling your fax to see if it answers. There may also be settings on your fax to set it up if an answering machine or telephone is on the same line.
If you actually have a 2 line setup with 2 #'s each with it's own separate line, it's wired backwards. Otherwise (distinctive ring, etc) the machine has to be capable of and set-up to recognize which ring pattern is a fax call. Also, you have to enable auto-answer on the fax machine.
unplug the fax from the phone line. call it from you cell.if you hear your phones ringing in the house, plug the fax machine back into the jack. [you should still be on your cell phone] if the line goes dead or stops ringing, there is a short with the fax machine or wire to the jack.if you hear a busy signal without the fax plugged in, unplug everything you have plugged into phone jacks thruout the house. call your # again.if you hear ringing on your cell phone, plug everything back in one at a time.[again while still on your cell phone] if it was one of the phones plugged into a jack, when you plug the shorted phone back into the jack, the line will go dead again. that phone or cord is the problem.
if still rings busy when everything is unplugged, then call your phone company. it can be an inside wire or jack problem, or the problem is outside your home.
hope this helps
Cannot figure how to hook up Canon MP830 all in one fax with remote answering machine. I can plug in phone line to send faxes fine but when hooked up in same hole and the phone rings it goes immediately to fax and can't receive phone calls. Maybe i have phone line hooked up in wrong place on my machine. The answering machine is in our master bedroom on the other side of the house. With my last a canon also i had it hooked up to go to fax after a certain amount of rings and it worked fine. That machine got fried by lightening and i replaced it with this machine. If anyone knows what i am doing wrong i really need this fax hooked up all the time for my business.
