I have had this unit for five days and was in the process of setting up all of the options. It was working fine when I shut it off. When I restart it now it goes through the warning page, as it should, but when I touch the OK button, to proceed, it goes to system settings rather than the main menu. I can go through all of the settings and diagnostics, in settings, but I cannot get out of the this mode. I have tried the reset several. One other thing. When I use the touch screen test in diagnostics, I can touch the screen at any point to make it work rather than just the specific point requested. I also cannot exit this screen without turning the unit off.
yes, i just got my unit magellan maestro 4250 yesterday and a few hours later it locked up on the first screen where it has a magellan logo and a scroll bar, went to the website to see if there was a fix but saw it had no customer service support open to answer calls on weekends, so i tried maggie but that was no help, i tried and tried several times and nothing still stuck in first boot up screen that says magellan w/scroll bar and now this morning i went to take it out of the little black case and turn it on thinking perhaps needed a rest but no that was not the case either and also when powered up i noticed then that it had some little areas of black splotches on the screen area too so i know its got some issues!!!
A 6ya expert can help you resolve that issue over the phone in a minute or two.
Best thing about this new service is that you are never placed on hold and get to talk to real repairmen in the US.
The service is completely free and covers almost anything you can think of (from cars to computers, handyman, and even drones). click here to download the app (for users in the US for now) and get all the help you need. Good luck!

The Magellan 4250 LCD display brightness settings does not do much. I can understand how annoying it is to have the sun's glare on the display making it unreadable. You can improvise a simple sun shade like i did, cut and fit a card board strip on top of your GPS unit to block out the sun glare. It's just simple and cheap solution.
I just purchased a referb from TigerDirect and the only issue I discovered was a lockup when the unit goes to sleep. Try holding down the power button for 15 seconds then release it to cycle the unit. Then hold the power button down again for 5 second to start it back up. I had to do this for my bluetooth to work and not freeze up. Now I just turn it on and off manually and avoid having it go to sleep. I also downloaded the firmware update to 4.86, you can download it from Magellan's website. My unit works great so if that doesn't work contact Magellan and I'm sure they will have a solution.
Questions for Magellan: 1) why would they sell, in 2009, gps units with old 2007 maps loaded in them, requiring the purchaser to buy a current map, and 2) if there is a problem with downloading the current maps, why is there not an advisement or warning to the installer.
Other than replacing the unit, there appears to be no "fix".
Regarding going straight to settings page, there is a file in one of the folders called navigator.exe. This is the menu used to access the map and the system settings and enter an address. Possibly, this file became corrupt while you were setting up your options. I suggest that you download the latest firmware update online from magellangps.com and install it. If, for some reason, the update fails after multiple attempts, then do the following:
In the .zip file of the latest firmware available, there are 2 files: Readme.pdf and Magellan_Maestro_4250_4_86_Rel1.exe
Extract the Magellan_Maestro_4250_4_86_Rel1.exe and change the .exe to .zip
Open with a .zip file reader such as Winzip.
Copy the file Navigator.exe to the folder where the Navigator.exe file is placed in the GPS. Overwrite that file.
This will at least give you access to the menu and the map.
