It makes a humming noise when you try to cook , I'd know if it is heating because I don't keep running it. I'm afraid it will get ruined. There is no code in the display when running it. My husband says it sounds like the motor is stuck. The model number is JVM187OWF001. The serial # is DG991721S. Hope this helps. Thanks

Thanks I'll call a service technician tomorrow. Will it hurt the microwave if I run it?

Is it making this noise whenever it's plugged in, or just when you try to cook with it?

Is it heating / cooking when it should not be?

Is there any code in the display?

    What is your model number?

Most commonly, this is a shorted high voltage rectifier diode or a failed magnetron.

If it's within the magnetron portion of the warranty (usually 5-9 years) but out of the original full warranty (usually 1 year), then your manufacturer will cover the part cost, but not the cost to visit you or the labor charge to do the work.

GE Customer Service is here. They can help with the warranty info & help you find a local servicer.

If you or someone you know decide to look into it yourself, we have critical safety information and disassembly information at our site, and our link is at our listing here on FixYa.

Here are two links but read the safety warnings first:

http://www.gallawa.com/microtech/diode.html (if it is NOT shorted, it's probably fine)
http://www.gallawa.com/microtech/mag_test.html

You can usually find helpful exploded view diagrams and order parts by entering your full model number here.

There should also be a "mini-manual" hidden inside the unit behind the control panel or hidden on the left side behind the grille, which is very helpful when troubleshooting & testing.

We're happy to help you with free advice and we'd appreciate your thoughtful rating of our answer.

Sharp R-530E microwave turns on when door opens

If it makes that hefty clunk and humming that microwaves make when working, that is NOT GOOD as it is the magnetron working producing radiation, so just needs chucking in the bin. It's not dangerous if it's just the fan (a much more gentle humming!

No heat in microwave. Makes loud humming sound when turn on. Model GE Spacemaker JVM166OWBC 04

The humming can be caused by a couple of bad parts. Usually it's the magnetron tube, the microwave source. They often fail by shorting out, and the loud hum from the power supply is what you hear. Another part called the HV diode may also have shorted, but the magnetron is more common.

A bad magnetron can be replaced, but it's a costly part. And microwave service should be left to a professional, because there are dangerous voltages under the cover and a chance of microwave leakage if repairs aren't done correctly. Between the part and labor costs, it might be more economical to replace the oven. Let a qualified servicer give you a repair estimate and then decide.

The unit is 3 years old and when I turn it on there is a loud hum. Theunit also does not heat but turns the turntable?

From your description it sounds like the magnetron has failed in this oven. That's the part the makes the microwaves to heat the food. It typically fails by shorting out and making a loud hum noise. It not usually worth fixing since the price of a replacement magnetron is almost as much as a new oven.

Microwave problem

Is this a new or used unit, and is the humming sound new? Can you watch the fan blade go around or is it going too fast to watch a blade?
