If not locked by a region code, then it needs to clean the lens.. Manually cleaning the lens To locate the laser lens, look around the door or drawer of the DVD player and you will see a small circular disc, which is often called the turntable or disc platter. Right off the edge of the platter you should see a small clear lens. There are some manufacturers that have had problems with the lens, depending on the age of the unit. In these problem players, moving the unit to a different location, turning the unit upside down, or sometimes even without moving the unit, the lens can become detached from the laser assembly and floats around inside the unit. You can re-glue it back with a little crazy glue, BUT it must be perfectly centered, and without getting any glue on it. So, if you don?t see the plastic lens, but instead see the laser pick-up assembly, look around for the lens inside the unit and glue it back on. To clean the lens you must use very little pressure. Take a cotton swab and barely moisten it with plain, non-scented, or oily type alcohol. In a swirling motion, very gently rub the lens until you?ve covered it entirely. Then repeat using the dry end. If the cleaning didn?t help, don?t despair just yet. You can see if there?s a problem elsewhere in the unit by using a few simple tricks and tips. First thing you want to see if the unit?s laser is in good working order. This method isn?t foolproof, but most of the time works admirably. When you insert a disc, see if you can look up underneath where the disc sits on the turntable. Observe the laser lens going up and down. If the lens is trying to focus, that?s good! After a few seconds of the lens trying to focus, the platter should start to spin. On almost every CD/DVD unit I've encountered, the unit won't spin unless the laser has properly focused on the surface of the disc. If the unit spins up and and then shuts down, you should check and make sure the laser pick-up assembly slider mechanism is working without any obstructions and that the small chrome rail that it slides on is slightly greased. Don?t go overboard with the grease though, as too much can cause all sorts of problems. The slider mechanism, depending on the age of the unit and the manufacturer, consists of the small chrome rail, a drive motor, a small gear assembly, and (in some units) a small belt that drives the slider unit via the motor. This small belt causes all sorts of problems. If the belt is broken or slipping, it can cause skipping, dropouts, or simply no start up at all. Also, if the belt breaks in the middle of the disc, the drive mechanism gets hair or dirt wrapped up into the gears, or the pick-up assembly doesn?t return to the start position (called home), the unit will (99% of the time) refuse to release the disc, causing it to become stuck inside the unit. There?s a little micro or leaf type switch located at home position that sometimes gets dirty or breaks and, causing this problem also. If the disc starts to spin slowly and doesn?t come up to speed, the spindle motor that?s attached to the turntable platter is a common problem. There could also be a problem with the spindle motor driver controller IC or the power supply regulator that supplies voltage to the driver IC. If your dvd not playing the originals dvd,the problem is in the optics lens maybe accumulated dirt and dust need to clean ,use a special cleaner i have site below that you can order online.. http://www.amazon.com/Maxell-DVD-LC-DVD-Lens-Cleaner/dp/B00000JPPI Regards, VOTIT

HI,

see if the player tries to read the disc. Load a disc and listen.
Does the player make squealing noises or is it totally quiet? Squealing noises may indicate that the player is trying to synchronize with the disc but can't due to an obstruction on the lens or in the laser path inside the pickup or a defect in the pickup. This can also be caused by an intermittent signal problem due to a faulty ribbon cable.

Totally silent means that the photo sensor is not getting any usable input from the laser at all, meaning that the pickup is "blind" for lack of a better word.
This can be caused by an obstruction of the beam by foreign matter on the lens or inside the pickup all the way to a marginal or failed laser diode and/or photosensor array. This can also be caused by a bad ribbon cable with one or more severed traces.

You could try to clean the optics. This is the most common malfunction as far as i know in all disc players. It would involve taking the cover off and finding a way to expose the lense, and then cleaning it with a very gentle brush. some players have a cover for the lense that swings to the side during playing, this greatly reduces the chance of dust accumulating, but its still worth the try.

If you actually see dust on the lense, then its just that simple. clean, close, play.

It may also be worth your while to check on the small shafting that guides the carriage of the laser pickup. Dirt, grome, dust and solidified lubricant can cause stoppage of the carriage and the laser eye then fails to read the next track.

This can be a problem with the regional code make sure that your player is unlock t play multi region DVD , if that was working fine before you may need to clean the Lens of your player by using a Lens cleanre because this can be a dirty lens and hopefully not a bad lens...

Hope that helps........

Try a lens cleaner disk.

http://www.google.com/products/catalog?q=lens+cleaner&rls=com.microsoft:fi&ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8&um=1&cid=14339597901623030922&sa=X&oi=product_catalog_result&resnum=1&ct=result#ps-sellers

if a cleaner doesn't fix the problem, the lens might need to be replaced or requires adjustment by a professional.

My 2 1/2 year old LG dvd/vcr recorder will play some dvds but will not play others. It says unknown disc. I was told to try a lens cleaner; I bought one and the lens cleaner says unknown disc as well. ...

Hi,

Your DVD /VCR says unknown disc because the
dvd which you have inserted is not of the supported format by player.

If you insert unsupported formats only it will say as unknown disc. This is not related with disc cleaners.

Please insert the supported formats and it will play the disc.

Thanx

Dvds not playin

It may be a problem with the laser or the lens. If the DVDs work on another player, try first to have the lens cleaned. You may use a lens cleaner with cleaning solution for this one. If that does not work, you have to inspect the disc drive closely and check for physical damages on the circuit like burnt parts or leaking capacitors. Inspect the lens as well.

MODEL LG RC299 NOT READING DVD VIDEO'S. ERROR COMES UP "UNKNOWN DISC.PLEASE CHECK DISC". PLAY'S OK PREVIOUSLY RECORDERED DISC'S,RECORDERED ON THIS UNIT.

I also have this annoying problem - but I bought mine new on ebay and have zero after-sales support. I have tried all the hacks I cna find over the last 12 months and when I am finished, the messages all say 'congratulations, you're now region free'. But even the local DVDs don't work. Disc ejects itself with irritating message 'unknown disc'. Does anyone have this problem who has a SALES RECEIPT from an authorised LG dealer? If so, can you jump up and down with LG until they offer a solution? Thanks!
