You can get good assistance at the DX 398 Group at Yahoo! The DX 398 is the same radio as the ATS-909. It was the name used by Radio Shack when they marketed it. Here's the URL for the DX398 group: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/DX398/ They will definately welcome your questions and will likely provide some valuable answers.

Remove the battery compartment door and the batteries. There should be a small hole marked "reset" under the upper battery cradle. Press (gently...until it clicks) and hold for 5 seconds. Replace batteries and try again.

SOURCE: Sangean ATS-803A - no audio
If its not a micro-p glitch, sounds like the radio was subject to a spike or surge wile plugged into the AC adapter. If the "power" light stays on all the time, thats what happened. Believe me, I was Sangean America's tech from 1990-1995.
The fix is to replace a transistor, or fet in the main pwr supply. (Close to where the adaptor plugs in.)
I wish I could give more details, but its been 14 long, long years.
